No you cant use this phone for banking ect, I made this mistake, purly a decerotive item of this age, looks nice in the hall, thats all its good for. The handle is heavy so long calls to a friend is an arm ache aswell

It sounds pretty much like a mechanical bell. But now I have had it for some time it has developed a loud buzz from the ear piece and the hand set is very heavy which means you cant use it for long periods of time. Overall looks good but I only use it to answer in my bedroom and say I will call back on modern one downstairs

You can always place the handset the other way round on the hooks if you want to pick it up with your right hand, the curly cord has plenty of "stretch". The receiver is heavier than a normal hands free phone but I don't find it uncomfortable to hold for a reasonably long conversation.
