The watch has three state back light (off, bright, brighter). It has a direct button for change the level (so you don't have to go into any menu.)

to be honest I've had 2 different garmins over 8yrs and never had use of the warranty so can't really help there. I only got this model as I have started doing triathlon and its waterproof. If I were just running I would stick with the 305 - does what it says on the box :) brilliant kit

I can confirm that it DOES calculate calorie burn when engaged in gym cardio activity. I have my 'Other' profile set up with 4 fields - time, current HR, Avg Hr, Calories: I find it much more accurate than the cardio machines. It calculates calorie burn based on HR and your bodyweight as entered in your personal profile.

The included charging cable is however poorly made, it is similar to a plastic clothes' line clip and about as durable.
As my broke, I have to balance [with difficulty] the garmin onto the bottom half of clip to charge with something heavy to hold it in place as it buzzes when charging and it falls off.

The USB wireless connector to desktop which is possibly what you mean by ANT stick is also temperamental in use.
