All the connections on the back (a total of 6 - L+R input one, L+R input two, L+R output) are phono connections. If you need to use 3.5mm cables, you should be able to pick up adaptors for a pound or two

I never thought about using this device for phono, but why not? I do use it for rca and it works just perfectly. I have no idea if it's suitable or not for hi-end devices, since I don't have any, but for the regular hi-fi I guess it's ok, depends on the level, of course. This is also valid for your second question.

Yes, just plug your headphones into the socket on the front. However you may need an adapter as the socket is 3.5mm.

This is for connecting sources to(eg CD player,tuner,phono pre-amp)and is then connected to a single input on your amplifier.Speakers have to be connected to your amplifier as this device is not an amplifier.The headphone socket is a useful addition.
