The battery is there just to maintain the time in case of a power failure but the alarm only works when it is plugged in.

You can set two different alarm times. One for, say, morning to wake you up, and one for afternoon, e.g. When it's time to take the dog to the vets, pick the kids up from school, etc, etc...
