If it's up, there's that big empty square area you see on the picture. When flat, you only have those three ellipsis to provide air flow.

Yea, the item is easily portable. It is very lightweight (but not flimsy) and folds flat. You'll have no problem fitting it inside your laptop bag along with your other bits and pieces.
