Binoculars are a balancing act between magnification (the more magnification, the bigger the effect of hand shaking, the darker the image) and size/weight (the bigger the front lens, the bigger and heavier the binoculars). Thus you see 6x30, 7x50, 10x50, or in this case 8x40. I have tried lots over the years and I find these at 8x40 to be a very good balance. see less

Absolutely - I purchased these binoculars especially for birdwatching and am so pleased with the quality of image and ease and speed of focus. Even viewing the moon on a clear night is brilliant. Would highly recommend.
