I tried reading FOTR a few years ago and really struggled with it and got no further than that book. A friend who is a massive Tolkien fan suggested I skip the poems and songs.

Does anyone else recommend this? I feel like it'd be cheating!

I only read some of the poems and songs, Though I have read them all in the past. 'Where now the horse and the rider?' is the best. I read it to my husband, who wouldn't read Tolkien at any price, and he agreed with me, that it says something about the human condition. Most of the rest, I can leave.
