The cover is simple to remove. It easily slides off the folded grater. I had a little bit of trouble replacing the cover on the folded grater. I noted that I need to take care to align the base of the grater with the bottom ledge of the cover to let the cover slide on easily. It is easy to align the base of the grater to one of the guide rails within the cover, which causes the blades of the grater to `bite' into the plastic cover and get stuck. I had to be careful not to cut myself whilst trying release the two parts the first time I did this. It's just a case of remembering to align the bottom of the grater with the bottom of the cover.
Of the three different blade types, the coarse and fine I am familiar with. I have not seen or used the third blade type of grating surface before. It comprises horizontal metal blades, which stand proud of the surface, like shallow loops of ribbon, sharpened on both the top and bottom edges. They make a very nice cut for relish ingredients.
The 3-in-1 grater has little rubbery feet on the base that make for non-slip grating. The grater opens and clips together very easily to make a solid structure when grating. One of the surfaces is a clear plastic so I can see through the side at how the grating is going without having to lift up the grater or peek down the opening at the top. There is a space above the blades of the grater to hold when using it. This works very well.Read more ›
The grater comes boxed and with an instruction leaflet. Once unpacked, the grater is folded and in its protective sleeve. The grater is hinged, and unfolds and snaps together to make an upright triangular object that is hollow in the middle. Each of the three sides has a different grater - fine, medium and coarse. It's then a simple matter to grate whatever you want.
The grater folds flat, and can be stood upright or put flat in a drawer. It has a protective sleeve that slots onto it. This is to protect you from the razor-sharp grater edges. The graters are incredibly sharp, and will slice through just about anything. To maintain this level of sharpness, the grater is made of good quality steel, which is also fine in a dishwasher. It is certainly a thing built to last.
The only problem I had with it is snapping the two unfolded sides together. The demo video (see online) makes it look easy, but I wonder how many takes they did to get it right first time. I always end up fiddling to get the parts together. Once together though, it's solid stable. Folding it up for storage is much easier. It just comes apart and folds flat.
So, it's a simple gadget, built to last, easy to use, and easy to store. I'm not thrilled with the fiddly unfolding bit, but in every other respect it's been a really good grater. We call ours Alfred... Alfred the Grater.
The grating surfaces coped nicely with a variety of cheeses, vegetables and even made nice breadcrumbs using the fine section and some stale bread.
I'm really impressed, I was convinced it would be all pretty and no substance, but I was wrong. I really like this grater.
The fine grater is good for grating parmesan, and nutmeg. The coarse is good for regular cheese and also chocolate. The two way I don't use as much but is definitely useful for grating carrot and apple into salads etc.
Overall I really rate it, I have a few other Zyliss products and I love their build quality.
The three sides have different textures, and can be regarded as fine, medium and coarse, but still not as coarse as the coarse mode on either of our two ancient graters (which look a bit like this and this).
It can be cleaned in a dishwasher. I don't recommend brushing it under a running tap because the razor sharp cutters will simply eat the bristles.
Fortunately it is supplied with a protective cover for when it is not in use; without that cover I would expect it could do serious damage to the rest of the contents of the drawer it will live in.
The instructions are simple;
. hold it only by the plastic top at all times,
. and make sure it is properly locked into the triangular shape before using it,
. and take great care not to grate your fingertips,
. after cleaning it, fold it up and carefully replace the cover before storing it. (Easier said than done, there is a trick to unlocking it.)
Cheese, carrots, celery and potatoes seem to simply melt through it, and it is ideal for when one is only preparing small portions and does not want the hassle of cleaning a food processor.Read more ›
