As everyone else says, you just plug it in to your network, stick in your devices and you're good to go. It really is as easy as that.
My NAS can be seen across the network and I can teamview in to my laptop running as a server with ease. Connection speed is solid. Perfect product. It's also much smaller than I thought it would be and quite attractive! Brushed metal finish is classy and is unobtrusive.
This product is nice and compact, and simple in function. Just plug it into the power and connect your cables. Highly recommended.
Connect it to all your equipment and your ADSL modem router for the internet. It's just plug and play out of the box. All your equipment can share data and files at the higher 1Gbit ethernet rate (provided they have 1Gbit ethernet ports). They can still connect to the internet because your usual ADSL modem is plugged into the switch as well.
If like me, you find your ADSL modem router reliable but only offering 100Mbps and you have 1Gbit/Gigabit (1000Mb/s - i.e. 10x faster than 100mbit/s) capable equipment then this box is ideal. Most ADSL modem routers for broadband internet are 100mbit/s, because the internet speeds are well under that. But if you want to share files and data faster between your machines locally in the office, then this ZyXEL GS-105B 5 port Gigabit ethernet is an ideal addon.
It's also backward compatible with the more commonplace 100mbit/s ethernet devices and equipment too. Although most PCs/Macs etc. now and a few years old usually have gigabit ports, if you have a older notebook PC or Mac with only 100mbit/s ports you may be able to add a PCMCIA or expresscard expansion card providing gigabit ethernet to take advantage of the ZyXEL GS-105B 5 port Gigabit ethernet switch. Likewise most desktop PCs will have free PCI expansion slots that can have a gigabit ethernet expansion card- I've bought a PCI card for my slightly older PC. Works fine in Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux too.
But even if either of these options isn't possible, there are simple USB2.0 gigabit ethernet adapters that will give you *some* of the speed increase - USB2.0 is 480Mbit/s but gigabit ethernet is 1000mbit/s so you'll get theoretically less than half of gigabit ethernet speeds, maybe in reality about around 200mbit/s with USB2.0 adapter (due to overheads of the adapter conversion) but still worthwhile as better than 100mbit ethernet (I've bought one for my netbook). All of these suggestions available on amazon.
My main home network is running at 100 MB, but the three PCs I have going through this switch all have the capability of running at 1 GB via their network cards, and I was pleasantly surprised to see my data whizzing along at previously unheard of speeds on my LAN when I copied some large files between 2 of the PCs using the switch. Note this was all done using autonegotiation ie. I just plugged everything in and let it configure itself on the switch and the PCs.
Highly recommended if the four ports on your broadband router are not enough and you don't want to switch to wireless!
