There is a great book waiting to be written about the Birmingham Zulu's, but unfortunately this is not it.

No one who came up against the Zulus will have anything other than respect for them, regardless of the outcome, and they certainly earned their place in the top tier of "firms", but this fragmented series of disjointed anecdotes does little more than replicate dozens of other similar collections.

The author has a poor grasp of the reality of life on the terraces from the 70's through to the 90's, and appears to be more interested in self-promotion, rather than putting together a coherent storyline. Even the claim to be the first multicultural "firm" is debatable, as I personally can recall seeing a large multi-cultural Millwall contingent getting wasted at an FA Cup tie at Goodison Park in the early 70s.

The writing is stilted, there are many gaps in both the timeline and event narratives, the incidents are carefully selected and often incomplete, and overall the book does little to add to anything that could have been compiled from newspaper and television reports.

Save your money until a book is written that does justice to the Zulus.

The author brilliantly shows the reality of life on the terraces from the 70’s through to the 90’s about the first multicultural firm. It’s a very detailed account of a notorious hooligan firm – Zulu Warriors. A range of contributors stitched together by a talented journalist provides a fresh detailed account of the past 40 years. All credit must go out to the author and the lads who put this book together.
