The Zoom H2n Handy Recorder
Five microphones, four ways of recording
Zoom's H2n Handy Recorder is the only portable device to come with five built-in microphones and four different recording modes: X/Y, Mid-Side, 2-channel surround and 4-channel surround. The H2n can handle just about anything from live concert and rehearsal recording to location videography. It's also a great choice for generating lasting audio documents of important events like lectures, meetings, weddings, and parties.
- Five built-in microphones and four recording modes: Mid-Side (MS) stereo, X/Y stereo, and both 2-channel and 4-channel surround
- Records directly to SD and SDHC cards up to 32GB
- Supports up to 24-bit/96kHz WAV audio as well as a variety of MP3 formats
- Analog-type mic gain knob
- Onboard effects, including compression/limiting and low-cut filtering, plus chromatic tuner and metronome
- Auto Gain, Auto-record, and Pre-record features, plus Data Recovery function
- Requires just two AA alkaline or NiMH rechargeable battery, with up to 20 hours of battery life
Convert and mix
The H2n allows you to easily convert WAV files to MP3 format, plus you can use its internal mixer to mix down four-channel surround files to stereo, with independent control over level and panning.
Flexible inputs and outputs
The H2n offers a variety of inputs and outputs for flexibility in recording.
There's a Line In jack that can accept two channels of mic- and/or line-level signals (including microphones requiring plug-in power), as well as a stereo line out / headphone jack with a dedicated volume control. There's even a built-in speaker for fast monitoring without the need to make any connections.
In addition, the H2n's USB port allows recorded files to be imported into computer editing software such as the supplied WaveLab LE. You can even use the H2n as a 2-in/2-out audio interface or as a USB microphone.
X/Y recording provides a great way to cover a wide area while still capturing sound sources in the center with clarity and definition. The H2n's built-in X/Y microphone provides two matched unidirectional mic elements set at a 90 degree angle relative to one another.
The 'Mid' microphone element in the H2n's MS mic picks up signal coming from directly in front, while the 'Side' mics capture the sounds coming from the left and right. You can then adjust the relative level of each, either during recording or during post-production, to alter the stereo width while still maintaining perfect mono compatibility.
The H2n allows you to combine the signals from both the X/Y and MS microphones in order to create two- or four-channel surround sound recordings that capture everything you hear, not just those sounds coming from in front of you, but from all directions.

Sound 4.9 out of 5 (could do with a bit more LF extension, I'm being ultra picky here!)
My son has been using this for coursework on his BA Mus course, and for recording his band and other musicians. He can't praise its quality highly enough, (and he is the ultra picky one, when it comes to sound quality). Needles to say it's permanently attached to his hip in the belt strap.
The only down side really is that it takes a few days of messing around to really get used to the way it works, and you will definitely need the accessory pack for it. But, its easily one of the best audio recorders I or my husband have ever used.
Compared to the price of the more expensive sound recorders out there, this "cheap" unit is hitting WAY above its weight. the only way it could be better, is if zoom release one that makes coffee as well.
As I record choral music I needed a 'handy,' portable and unobtrusive mike. There are also times when I need to be able to record interviews and meetings. The Zoom H2N can fulfill all these requirements. The software provided with the item, the WaveLab LE7 is taking a bit of time to get to grips with, but I am sure with use it will become easier to understand.
All in all I am very pleased with this item and know it will be a very useful addition to my kit.
The recordings have gone well, even if it is a little merciless to singers, picking up everything. It is delightfully easy to use, and unobtrusive, so it can be plonked down and capture occasions where otherwise one would feel to self-conscious. Particularly pleased that I got a first performance of my choral director's Christmas suite of music by putting the recorder under a seat, and another time I got a priceless recording of the music for a theatre company production, which I put near a light and everyone thought it was just a bit of the apparatus. A 32GB card and decently frugal battery use means it can be set half an hour before, and edited afterwards. I also use it to record my mother at her singing course. The two second pre-record is a great blessing here, meaning that hurried starts do not miss the beginning of what you are recording. I like the variety of compression / automatic gain control settings in addition to being able to set the level manually. You cannot split L and R levels, but it is easy enough to correct any imbalances offline.
I did get the accessory set. It adds another £30 to the cost, but I think it is worth it. Most useful of all is that bit of foam, which is probably just a bit of packing material, but fits the bottom of the recorder beautifully and makes a perfect stand. Much better than a tripod.
Probably the most annoying thing is the playback speaker is just too quiet to use it as a playback device, and only provides an indication than anything that is pleasant to listen to. If the priority has been given to versatility and record quality, it is a fair trade-off though.Read more ›
The access to menus etc is straight forward but the button for enter is a rocker switch that is a little temperamental and frustrating to hit in the middle.
All in all a really great, high quality, useful tool.

Can be used for bat detection in the field, produced a good clear sound and can be snipped and monitored easily on the computer. Would definitely purchase another one.Published 25 days ago by Kate
Everything perfect with product.
No problem at all.
Good sound recording and plenty functionalities to explore.
Decent recorder although just a bit to big to fit easily in pocket. Hold button is useful which prevents you accidentally stopping recordings. Read morePublished 3 months ago by Macgregor
It's a great bit of kit, smart and intuitive - and good improvement from it's predecessor. The only nag I have is that it appears the stand screw-mount underneath to attach a stand... Read morePublished 4 months ago by pobz
