Format: Paperback
Knowing a little about Anderson's brand of sophisticated Marxism from the fracas that ensued following the putsch that landed him the New Left Review, I thought this might be good. I knew his eminence annoyed E.P. Thompson, who is united even with the anti-Communist Tony Judt in his contempt for the polysyllabic, Althusserian Marxism promoted by Anderson (who happens to have inherited wealth, for what that's worth). Oddly, as a rich British Marxist teaching in sunny L.A., you'd think him an easy target, thus it says much about his intellectual integrity that you can read his almost (Fredric) Jamesonian pieces of nuanced dissection without laughing. Unlike many in the NLR he writes clearly, a surprise, and a rare thing for one steeped in Critical Theory. As it happens, I don't agree with much as I question Marxism's basic assumptions, but I enjoyed this book enormously, as it is stylish and his choice of people to appraise is astute, e.g. Trotsky's biographer Isaac Deutscher, Carlo 'Witches' Ginzbourg and Ernst Gellner I especially liked. He has the teachers' talent of making you enjoy his subject and wanting to know more. He is fair-minded if not inclined to compromise. A very enjoyable book that is stylish, well informed and provocative; the sort of book anyone with a brain will appreciate. I am just rereading it after a week, refreshing and well argued.
