About the Author

Lily Vanilli, aka Lily Jones, is a baker and cake designer. Originally a graphic designer, she began baking as a hobby and then started selling her cakes at Swanfield market near Brick Lane. Her cakes are available online at www.lilyvanilli.com and from Harrods food hall. She is known for her unusual recipes, she experiments with savoury ingredients such as avocado and bacon, and designs spectacular cakes and other edible treats, such as the marzipan insects she made for an Alexander McQueen film project, or the blood and gore cupcakes created for Maaike Meeking's show at London Fashion Week. Lots of fun to be had in this neat little book... some really breathtaking cakes for special occasions are made simple with easy to follow instructions.

Some of the standouts here are a red velvet heart cake, glistening with blood, cakes with "glass" shards coming out of them, space invader cakes, and some gruesome creature based cakes... yuck! (in a good way)

At the back of the book are about 30 more "normal" recipes for cupcakes, so if creating gruesome delights isn't your thing, you should still buy this book to get some seriously inventive and delicious cupcake ideas from one of the most creative people in baking at the moment.

Fully recommended!

Horrid pictures of blood filled cupcakes!

Basically this book is about decorating cupcakes rather than making them (although there are many recipes). Some of the recipes are VERY graphic and look like something you would see on the floor of a butchers, or possibly a morgue.

Wonderful fun... A must for Halloween .

I bought this book, well, if I am honest I bought it because it is just the sort of thing that appeals to me! I am a fan of anything a little Kitschy and cupcakes, and this seemed to combine both of those loves. It didn't disappoint. It has some really great ideas for some really wicked little cakes - my particular favourites are the hearts, I haven't tried them yet I have to admit but good lord do they look gruesome in the picture! I find that invariably the recipes in this book turn out great. The decoration ideas are superb, little edible beatles and glass being amongst my favourite offerings. I like that the frosting and cake recipes are separate so you can pick and choose, but for each cake shown the frosting and cake recipe used are give, with some alternatives too. I would recommend this book over and over, and don't let how complicated some of the ideas look put you off, they really aren't. A*

Excellent ideas for halloween party cakes. Some simple and very effective designs and some requiring a little bit more of an artistic hand.

Would recommend.

I bought this for a friend and her 4 year old daughter in January, thinking it would be nice to make some cupcakes that were unusual and fun looking. This little book is a gem, its got some great ideas and the cakes look really creepy, which should satisfy adults and children alike if you like this sort of thing (particularly at Halloween!). Some of the recipes are very clever, a lot of the cake mixtures are simple and its the decorations that require more of the work, but it looks easy to follow and understand, and my friend and her daughter absolutely loved it!

I found this book through the author's blog (google Lily Vanilli and Bleeding Hearts!)and thought the concept was amazing. Bought this for my friend's birthday and was very impressed when it arrived. It's a lovely little book with gorgeous photos of gorgeous cakes. As the title suggests, the recipes are deliciously gothic and macabre-looking--definitely a twisted version of desserts. It's a very creative endeavour on the author's part and I can't wait for my friend to experiment! Incidentally, the Bleeding Heart recipe is included...It's a perfect gift for someone with great sense of humour and love of cakes (I know, everyone, right? Unless they are slightly squeamish, like my husband, who couldn't stop shuddering at the photos!).

A brilliant book for anyone fed up with cutesy cupcakes slathered in too-sweet frosting.

My son was given this for his birthday - absolutely inspired! There are several different cake and frosting recipes, rather than just one with different flavourings, as well as written details of how to recreate the weird and gruesome effects. Illustrations of the processes used would be beneficial, rather than just photographs of the finished product.

The only other downside - apart from the Americanisms - is the enormous quantity of food colouring used. So far, we have just cut the amount of food dye, without the effect being too noticeable.

If you enjoy cake decorating, and are looking for something different - buy this book.
