The title says it all. 20 excellent tracks taken from the Specialty sessions. And you know with Specialty with the backing of Art Rupe and Bumps Blackwell the end result is going to be pretty good - solid mid 50s R&B rythms mixed in with some slower blues. And what a treat to find the ever wonderful Lonesome Sundown on guitar. And if you want to hear some classic seriously lazy laid back swamp style R&B you should do yourself a favour and check out his own releases on Excello which are also on Ace

4.0 out of 5 stars "ZODICO BLUES & BOOGIE"--THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL 7 Oct. 2014
By Stuart Jefferson - Published on Amazon.com

Zydeco music--and Clifton Chenier--don't get the accolades of other genres and musicians. The music is stomping, Louisiana/Cajun/good- time/bluesy stuff that will put you in a party mood very quickly. Or at the very least get your foot to tapping. Chenier was one of the best and certainly one of the most important performers of this style of music. This set of early recordings will take you back to those days of plain old stomping/dance music that has no pretensions except a good time.

This album is in a sense a companion to "Bayou Boogie", an early Chenier album from the same period--the 1950's. When people unfamiliar with Zydeco music hear the word "accordion" they freeze. But this isn't your typical "accordion music"--not by a long shot. Besides Chenier on accordion and vocals (in both English and French/Cajun), he has a small band that includes tenor sax, piano, guitars (Philip Walker and Lonesome Sundown), bass, drums, and scrub board (played by Chenier's brother Cleveland). And when they get to playing, their music is not quite like anything you've heard before.

From the start of "Boppin' The Rock", into "Ay Te Te Fee", things really start to roll. And then Chenier slows things down a bit with "The Cats Dreamin'", which gives the band (and Chenier) a chance to play something that would get slow dancers out on the floor, dancing closely together to the slow rhythms. But this music is largely good time music so the tempos pick up once again. And the album is full of that kind of music--the kind that gets under your skin until you can't sit still. And check out the two versions of "Chenier's Boogie", one with vocals and one without. These are "working" tapes with Chenier and the band rocking out trying slightly different arrangements. But don't think this is some kind of contractual album full of filler or bottom of the barrel scrapings--no way!

Fans of Zydeco/Chenier will know what I'm talking about and will want to check out this early set of "Zodico" (as it's sometimes spelled), especially if you own the "Bayou Blues" set. This is more of the same, and more is just fine. This isn't fancy music--it's sometimes a little rough around the edges--but it more than makes up for that with the bluesy good time spirit of the music. And there's few who can put this music across as well as Clifton Chenier. The title pretty much days it all--"Zodico Blues & Boogie". Bon Ton Roulet!

Also check out Chenier's albums on the Arhoolie label. Virtually any album--live or studio--is full of great music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoldering Blues 1 April 2010

This is Clifton Chenier pre-Arhoolie records. It is blues with Lonesome Sundown and Philip Walker on guitars. It is some of the finest swamp blues or any kind of blues there is. The recording quality is fantastic. Great reverby sound. This was done in LA. Clifton ended up leaving LA and heading back to Louisiana but Philip Walker stayed in LA. A lot of this stuff is on the Bayou Blues cd (I'm pretty sure but check for yourself) which is going for a dollar or so on Amazon. Don't let the low price fool ya. This is as good as it gets.

Like the sound of Zydeco, but Clifton Chenier was the king of it and the songs are great for driving down the road to or working around the house!
