I'm a guitarist. I've seen Frank play live and up close, and have seen many DVDs and clips of him at work, and I'd have to say in all honesty, that he would tip his hat to his son. In some of the more difficult, weird time passages, Frank would let George Duke, or Ian and Ruth Underwood play them. In fact, there's a documentary going around where Duke quotes Frank as not keen to play over chord progressions. He would usually play solos over 2 chord vamps. If so,. Dweezil has no such reserve! Case in point as he was growing up, check out "Whipping Post" on the "Does Humor Belong in Music" CD. Dweezil and Frank shred the Allman Brothers to pieces.
I think Frank's primary strength was as a writer and composer, which is NOT to say he was a bad guitarist! In fact, much of his music, to my ear, sounds classical in that it has movements, timbre and scope; not just your over-amplified 12 bar blues with lightning 64th note arpeggios in 11/9 time (and those are delightful indeed!).
Dweezil has a cam on the stock of his SG Gibson so you can see his fingerwork. From my experience with the Zapmeister, his son is doing stuff with the guitar that Frank just did not do - and that's darn impressive.
Apart from all of that, it is simply tres cool to see all the new, younger players bringing new life to Frank's stuff. These DVDs show a power and energy which is impressive. Not to mention guest spots by Napoleon Murphy Brock, Terry Bozio, and Steve Vai.Read more ›
