Having done extensive research on amazon.co.uk, amazon.com and others, I finally narrowed down the best laptop coolers, from reading reviews, to the Zalman ZM-NC3000U and the Cooler Master NotePal U3 Laptop Cooler. I was put off by negative views on the Cooler Masters build quality so finally plumped for the Zalman.
I ordered and received very next day from amazon.co.uk. It fitted my 17" laptop perfectly and the rubber grips on the Zalman held it firmly in place. I decided on the NC3000U over the NC3000S for the main reason that it was advertised as having a 4 USB hub. I was disappointed to discover that it only had a 3 USB hub. With the fan on full there was barely any audible noise from the fan and with my hand held over it there was a very slight feel of cold air. It certainly cooled the mesh of the Zalman which felt cold to the touch. My main disappointment was that having the fan located in the top left of my laptop, there was no holes on the stand below it so no cold air was getting to the hot areas of my laptop. Also having the stand on my knee was very uncomfortable with the sharp edges digging into my leg and I could not sit with it on my leg for any amount of time. I therefore returned the product and ordered the new model Zalman ZM-NC3500 Turbo Cooling where the stand is totally covered in holes so the cold air reaches all areas of the underneath of my laptop plus it has a Turbo button which has faster RPM therefore cooler air than the NC3000. It also actually has a 4 USB hub unlike the NC3000 and it was only £5 more and is a far better looking and more comfortable stand to have on your knee.Read more ›
What is a problem is right there in the product description. It's for laptops, but the manufacturers have assumed that you will be using your laptop on a table, if you try to use it on your, er... lap top, you'll find it quite uncomfortable, moving on to very uncomfortable after about half an hour. You will also have no difficulty in telling if the fan is switched on because you'll feel it as cold air from the fan finds its way out of the air intake at the bottom.
Another problem with using the cooler on your lap is the stupid little USB socket in the back of the device. I'm quite sure that used on a table it will be no problem at all, but on the lap it quickly starts moving and breaking contact, within a couple of weeks it will hardly be making contact at all unless you help the plug by holding it in, not an ideal position to use a computer from. What's ridiculous is that there is plenty of room on the back panel for a nice big regular USB socket with a deep pocket to hold the plug in. Zalman really didn't think this one through properly because the tiny camera-sized connection is just not fit for purpose.
This could have been a five pointer because it's a great device under the right circumstances, but one point deducted for the useless USB connection, and another one deducted arbitrarily by my lap which might just involuntarily attack this Zalman guy if it ever meets him, for blatent lapism.
I was recommended this laptop cooler, saying it would completely change everything. It didn't.
It doesn't really do anything, apart from being a notebook stand. I use it so that looking at my laptop screen from my second monitor is easier, but it doesn't lower the temperature basically at all when performing intensive tasks. However, I know that MacBooks are famous for getting really hot (apple design > functionality in terms of fans), so I can't really blame them for not being able to accomplish what seems impossible.
The upside to it, however, is that it's really, really quiet. To be honest, I can't hear it ever. If it lowers the temperature even by just a bit (which it doesn't seem to do most of the time) then it's worth it for me, because there is no downside to using it.
Not an amazing cooler, not going to change your life if you are using a Macbook Pro, but I know of people that receive greatly decreased temperatures when using other laptops and this cooler, so feel free to try it!
