I have an 17" HP Pavilion DV6 Laptop that is notorious for overheating, especially in the top left corner where the fan is located, uselessly, underneath.
Having done extensive research on amazon.co.uk, amazon.com and others, I finally narrowed down the best laptop coolers, from reading reviews, to the Zalman ZM-NC3000U and the Cooler Master NotePal U3 Laptop Cooler. I was put off by negative views on the Cooler Masters build quality so finally plumped for the Zalman.
I ordered and received very next day from amazon.co.uk. It fitted my 17" laptop perfectly and the rubber grips on the Zalman held it firmly in place. I decided on the NC3000U over the NC3000S for the main reason that it was advertised as having a 4 USB hub. I was disappointed to discover that it only had a 3 USB hub. With the fan on full there was barely any audible noise from the fan and with my hand held over it there was a very slight feel of cold air. It certainly cooled the mesh of the Zalman which felt cold to the touch. My main disappointment was that having the fan located in the top left of my laptop, there was no holes on the stand below it so no cold air was getting to the hot areas of my laptop. Also having the stand on my knee was very uncomfortable with the sharp edges digging into my leg and I could not sit with it on my leg for any amount of time. I therefore returned the product and ordered the new model Zalman ZM-NC3500 Turbo Cooling where the stand is totally covered in holes so the cold air reaches all areas of the underneath of my laptop plus it has a Turbo button which has faster RPM therefore cooler air than the NC3000. It also actually has a 4 USB hub unlike the NC3000 and it was only £5 more and is a far better looking and more comfortable stand to have on your knee.
In summary, this cooling stand would only be useful for laptops that do not have their fan in the top corners or if they do, they would need to be smaller than 17" to get any benefit from the cooling and with the design of the stand it is only useful to be used on a desk etc and not balanced on your leg.

Premium high quality aluminum is treated with S.A. (Sand Blasting, Anodizing) surface processing and has a black, high gloss body design. The entire notebook is quickly and powerfully cooled by 220mm Axial fan. 1300 high capacity vent holes on top of the ZM-NC3000 and evenly distribute the flow of cold air to cool the entire notebook.
The stress to the wrist and back is minimized by careful design with the real usage conditions in mind. There are rubber Grip-Strips on the upper and lower edges of the stand to prevent notebooks from sliding.
Fan speed is adjustable between 620~720RPM depending on the cooling performance and noise level according to the user's preference. Height can be adjusted according to user preference with the use of the Riser for user convenience and wrist protection. The notebook stand is conveniently powered by the notebook’s USB port and does not require any other electrical connection. A USB hub supporting 1 USB power port and 3 USB ports are included to connect various peripheral devices.
