Cool in every way

This thing is awesome to look at: great design, huge and all that shiny copper. I bought it on amazon after lots of research indicated it was very effective inoperation and installed it in a machine made up of what remained of my Dell XPS710 after the mobo gave up and a new box and mobo. The instructions are pathetic but after about an hour I had it fixed over the Intel QX6700 I pulled out of the Dell in a socket 775. You assemble the backplate, stick it under the mobo so the bolts protrude up through the 4 holes, spread the paste thinly, place the cooler onto the cpu and wind the 4 screws securely into the backplate bolt holes. Then plug in the fan cable. The unit can be oriented in any of the four directions over the cpu; mine blows upwards directly into the fan in the top of the case, using that to help suck air in the same direction, as well as convection. really good airflow. When I first switched on the cooler fan ran fast but then I got the mobo setup to manage all the fans (front, top, cpu) while targetting a temperature limit and all the fans slowed and the box went whisper quiet. I overclocked the cpu from the stock 2.66 to 3.2Ghz and the cpu temperature was 38degC (very low) and the fans were still slow. Next I need to load the cpu but so far very good.

Amazing cooler; one problem....

The fan bust on my old cooler, so I was running it as a passive heatsink for far too long. It shut down a few times, so I took the time to look at the temperatures and holy moly, the chip was over 90 degrees C! That meant it was time for an urgent upgrade. This said it was socket 939 compatible, so I took the plunge. It arrived quickly and the following day I set to work assembling it, cleaning out the case and preparing to install. It's a beautiful piece of equipment. There' a lot of copper real estate here - truly massive super-flat, thin fins; sharper than my old kitchen knives (so take care)! The base is pure copper. There are pure copper heatpipes and the beautiful fins, again, pure copper. Solidly constructed (although, how can a single piece of metal be anything other than solid?) and really quite heavy, it's a good job it comes with such a heavy-duty fitting kit - strong back plate, thick bolts. The supplied Zalman ZM-STG2 Super Thermal Grease is of the £5 variety, so ought to be decent, if not world-class. The 4-pin PWR fan socket was a conundrum, at first. The motherboard headers are 3-pin. Anyway, turns out you can run the fan with 3 pins, but without the speed control. There's a supplied resistor that you can put inline which slows the fan and reduces the noise from a pretty loud hum to a relative whisper (a big deal in a media system in your living room).

However, all was not well in my world and the reason why I withheld the 5th star will now become clear.

*************PROBLEM*************
Assuming compatibility wasn't an issue (socket 939 is in the compatibility list in the advert and elsewhere online), I set to, dismantling my system - a 6 year-old AMD Athlon XP, used purely as a media machine (video and music) - I took the old heatsink mount off... and realised there were only 2 mount holes where the big Zalman needed 4. Those two holes weren't even in a convenient place, so I had to do some thinking. This cooler would do the business, but there was no way I'd be able to use the supplied backplate and mount. Sending it back would incur all of the hassle of, well, sending it back. I decided to go all MacGyver on it and use the mount from my old cooler. Luckily, the old one was secured with a metal beam that straddled the top of the sink, so I threaded it over the top of the block and secured it. Luckily, the beam was mounted in a top-bottom manner (as opposed to laterally) because otherwise the heavy heatsink would have just slid off when the tower was stood. Luckily, the aged 3700+ CPU is long since out of warranty, otherwise it would've been returned.
**********PROBLEM SOLVED**********

Anyway, I got it fitted (with a lot of Jerry-rigging), booted it and took a look at my temperatures. Remember, originally the temperature was CPU-busting 90 degrees. Now, with the Zalman running, it was a positively chilly 37!

Marvelous. Hopefully it'll stay in place - I'll have to try not to bang it around too much - and serve me until the machine retires (soon, most likely). At that time I'll remove it and install on the new system... hopefully with the supplied mounting kit!

Bought this product not really hoping for a great deal other than an improvement in temperatures compared to the stock heatsink for my fx8150 and i have to admit it is absolutely fantastic at it's job. before i was experiencing idle temperatures of about 40 degrees and about 60 on 100% load. now i get temperatures of 15 on idle and a massive 35 on 100% load.

only major down side is that it is an absolute bugger to fit and as many other reviews have said the fins are bloody sharp. the thermal paste that comes with it is unlike any i have ever come across before in my life in the fact that it has the consistancy of blu-tac so is a pain to spread but i find if you just put a blob on either side it somehow turns it until a paste you can use

overall an absolutely fantastic buy and cannot fault it once its fitted

Not going to get technical as its not my thing. If you decide on this item to improve your CPU's cooling you won't be disappointed but beware it is quite a large replacement against a standard heatsink & fan. A very comprehensive kit with all that is needed including some very good quality heatsink paste - take time to read through the instructions a couple of times and sort out what bits you'll need for your CPU. Fitted mine to an Intel 775 socket CPU on an Asus motherboard and every thing married up perfectly the biggest task being the removal of the motherboard from the case to allow fitting of the back plate. The method of securing the heatsink & fan assembly to the CPU using screws and nuts is so much more positive than the original Intel setup which in my mind uses rather fiddly plastic clips and this in its self must be a great benefit to improving cooling of the CPU.
All in took me about an hour to complete the task and that included a cuppa and also cleaning a small amount of dust from every thing using the vacuum - very quite fan operation and CPU temperatures are now approx 10 degrees cooler.
Lastly my item was missing one of the 3 sets of fixing screws supplied for the fitting to the various types of CPU's ( luckily the one's i needed were present ) but all praise to Amazon and a lovely lady in Ireland that was sorted within an hour of me emailing them as it was arranged for a 2nd item to be sent out the next day so that i could remove the missing screws (wanted to be sure i could re use the item in the future when updating the CPU) and then return the 2nd item to Amazon at no cost to me - 10/10 for customer service.
Hope this helps others who are maybe bogged down from reading reviews or just plain unsure.
