In Carcassonne, players build the area surrounding this impressive city, one tile at a time. They then place a follower on fields, cities, roads or monasteries in order to score as many points as possible. These followers will become knights, monks, farmers and thieves, depending on where they are placed. No matter their function, the player who will most cleverly use their followers will win the game. A Tile-laying Challenge
Carcassonne is a clever tile-laying game based on the southern French city of Carcassonne, famous for its unique Roman and Medieval fortifications. The players develop the area around Carcassonne and deploy their followers on the roads, in the cities, in the cloisters, and in the fields while creating a perfect city landscape. With each tile placed, strategies will be tested and the skill of the players will determine who stands victorious.
Send your Followers into the City
Players deploy their limited followers to best control the landscape and, as the area expands with roads, fields, cities and cloisters, score as many points as possible. Using followers as thieves, farmers, knights and monks, the wise player will plan his moves carefully and deploy followers when and where he can earn the most points.
Simple yet Strategic
A simple, clever tile laying game that brings new challenges with every turn, Carcassonne can be played and enjoyed by the whole family, as well as within a gaming group or with new players. Carcassonne is easy to learn and creates enough tension to keep all players involved and waiting for the next tile to appear
- Easy to learn, lots of strategy
- Suitable for 2-5 Players
- 8+ Age
- 30-45 Minutes gameplay.
- Includes the river tile expansion
- Includes the Abbot expansion
At the start of each turn, players draw and place a tile on the board with a piece of southern French landscape on it. The tile might feature a city, a road, a cloister, grassland or some combination thereof and it must be placed adjacent to tiles that have already been played, in such a way that all connects correctly - cities are connected to cities, roads to roads, etc. Having placed a tile, the player can then decide to place one of his meeple followers (Wooden people tokens) on one of the areas on it: on the city as a knight, on the road as a robber, on a cloister as a monk or on the grass as a farmer. When that area is complete, that follower scores points is returned to the owner’s hand.
This edition also includes 2 free expansions - The River which consists of 12 tiles that are laid at the start of the game and can dramatically change tile placement for the rest of the game, and it also comes with the new Mini-expansion The Abbot. Since its release in 2001, Carcassonne’s popularity has led to the creation of several expansions which allow for the exploration of new aspects of the game such as the addition of trading or different building tiles.
Due to its elegantly simple gameplay that provides players with intense strategic and tactical decisions every turn, Carcassonne has picked up a number of awards throughout the years including the coveted Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) upon launch, in 2001.

I've been playing the app for several months now and couldn't resist the price drop of £15. I'd been watching the big boxes with more expansions included, but this offer was too good to resist.
In the box are the cardboard land tiles. In this set that's 84 ordinary tiles and 12 river tiles. Five sets of wooden meeples and an abbot meeple. Finally a scoreboard, that one meeple travels along to record your score, as you complete cities, roads and monasteries.
The game itself is very simple to play. You lay land tiles and choose to lay a meeple or not on one of it's component - field, road, city or monastery. They all have a slightly different scoring system, but if you complete them during the game you get points, if you don't complete, you still get points at the end scoring. The tactics and strategy involved can be complex, giving a 'simple' game a lot of depth.
It plays well with two players, but you can play with up to five. My six year old loves it, as it's simple enough for her to play .
The graphics and quality of the components is good. The rulebook is well laid out, with plenty of graphics and a good explanations
The only component I'm slightly disappointed in, is the scpre baord. I'd prefer it go higher than 49.
If you've never played before I'd recommend watching some of the You Tube videos's people have made about Carcassonne. There are plenty of reviews, game run throughs and rules explanations. Watching these can help learn the rules quicker and give you ideas on strategies to adopt etc.
Overall this is a really poor quality version that has been released and we've sent it back for a refund. Always a shame when a product that sells well, then lowers it's standards for greater profit margins. Will upload pictures tomorrow but customers should be advised.
This version had two of the xp (Rivers and Abbott) which add some variety as you learn the game and become better.
I don't find the game overly exciting, or tense, or even super strategic and it suffers a little bit from not being as exciting as some more modern games. What it does well is be a nice middle ground between really basic games, and more strategic games. It's a good filler, and doesn't take too long to finish a game.
The core mechanics are so simple anyone can be taught to play in a few minutes, and regardless of experience, can have a reasonably successful game. The new edition includes two 'mini-expansions' that really spice things up, you can use either, or both. I'm not going to go into any detail, there are other reviews here that do that, as well as the product description, but it's safe to say this is an incredibly fun, easy to pick up, game for all the family. The random element of drawing tiles means every player, regardless of experience, is a sailor on the seas of fate.
You won't regret buying this game. You won't regret playing this game. And nor will your friends and family.
Well worth the price, hours of fun to be be.
Gameplay averages 30-45 minutes, depending on how much thought and strategy you put into it, which is about the perfect balance between being involved and not being so long that you get bored and distracted.
Definitely for older children and above - and only the patient kids too, as it does require concentration and patience while other players think, and take their turn.

However, the reason for the 3 star review is because of the quality of the tiles. Otherwise it would be a solid 5.Read more
