With hundreds of generic 'your best carols' type CDs coming out at Christmas time treat yourself to something more interesting, lively and exciting! The York Waits and singer Deborah Catterall discover pieces from Christmas time before the Victorians 'standardised' the carols we all seem to use today. Employing an array of medieval and rennaisance instruments they play renditions of the carols and yuletide songs that were around in Europe back to the 14th Century. But this is no mere academic exercise, the array of instruments used and the vocal talent of Deborah Catterall bring these pieces to life and make the listener feel as if they are experiencing how Christmas must have been hundreds of years ago. It is fascinating to hear the 'original' versions of what have become our present day carols plus Christmas music from other countries (e.g. the charming 'El Noi de la Mare'from Catalonia where gifts for the Christ Child are raisins and sweet figs). There is a real glow about this CD - buy it and play it on Christmas Day around the tree - better still buy it and listen to it all year round!

St Thomas`s day, 21st of December, saw the ceremony of Yule Riding in the city of York. It was a sign that the twelve days of christmas were coming. Yule, a Norse festival still survived in York until it was banned in 1570 and this recording celebrates the Yule Riding festival before it changed to other forms of celebrtions around St Thomas`s day in York.
Today`s York Waits, recreate the city`s band as it was in its Tudor heyday. The recording begins by evoking the ancient English Yuletide ceremony but progesses throughout Europe. Celebrating German settings of Christmas Melodies to French Noels and Mediterranean songs. The set of recordings on this release draws close to an end back in England with a song that lements the end of the twelve days of Christmas.
The Original York Waits were employed by the Lord Mayor as the city's own band of musicians, they continued to keep night watches over York in the weeks leading up to Christmas, playing at various points to mark the hours and wake the citizens.
Today the York Waits Like their predecessors play upon instruments such as shawms, cornett, saggbut, and curtal, flutes, recorders great and small, crumhorns, bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies, lute and cittern.
Their performance on this recording is outstanding. They create a great Tudor atmosphere and seem to easily take the listener back in time to the sort of Christmas celebration that is now largely forgotten. All of the musicians are on top form and Deborah Catterall is perfection.
The sound is excellently balanced and the whole programme is very likeable.
I personally didn`t like the presentation of the artwork very much. The colours of red and grey I didnt find appealing but it does stand out above other releases and the music is what counts.
