What a shame, this could have been such a good, educational and entertaining book, but it feels as if it were knocked together over a weekend. It is a mess of jumbled, slight and slightly hectoring, finger wagging moments. There are so-called chapters, which sort of group things together, but they have no real cohesion. Thornton is undoubtedly an experienced journalist who loves research, which is why it is bewildering that she has put her name to this rather silly book. Almost all the points raised had already crossed my radar -and there was little that was really new or surprising. But, my real complaint is that it is so trivial. Pity.
