I am not the biggest fan of Ffaf, however a big enough fan to buy their cds and enjoy their music a fair bit.

I decided to buy this cd because of the sheer amount of content I did not own (4 new tracks and a whole cd of demos, b-sides and remixes) and for the most part, this cd is great value for money.

One of the only gripes is a couple of odd choices for the actual greatest hits part. 2 Tracks from pre-first album, four tracks from CDAIDC, 3 from Hours, 2 from TDTT and just 1 from MAH. I think the choice of a second song from TDTT (Walk Away) was odd as it didn't seem as big of a hit as The Great Wide Open. Also it would have been nice to have the inclusion of Waterfront Dance Club from MAH and also All The Rage from Hours.

Moans aside, this collection turns out to be a great purchase for even die hard fans of Ffaf. The greatest hits collection will serve as a ncie playlist for fans, with the new songs added onto the end of cd two. All of which, especially single Wrench, are good additions to the Ffaf back catalogue.

This brings me onto cd2. This contains a stack of b sides, demos, covers and a peculiar dance remix of Into Oblivion. This remix serves as curio, but is still welcome as by the time you get to that song you feel like you have got your moneys worth. For me, most of the b side songs were new and were fantastic additions to the collections. A cover of U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday and Thin Lizzy's The Boys Are Back In Town are interesting if a bit dull, but as I mentioned, very welcome to the collection. The highlight of cd2 for me is the acoustic version of Drive near its end.

So, any fan of Funeral For A Friend will enjoy the fantastic amount on offer here. For people new to the band this will serve as a great introduction with hits like Juneau, History, Roses For The Dead and Into Oblivion.

A must buy.

Funeral for a Friend released their debut album "Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation" in 2003 and since then have released a further five albums. This compilation covers the period 2002-2009 during which the band recorded their first four albums. This is not therefore a greatest hits album but is a range of songs from the first four albums along with an EP of new material and a selection of B-sides including some covers. I can't claim to be a huge fan of FFAF as I've never been able to fully embrace the screamo/hardcore scene but there have been several of their songs which I have liked and "Your History is Mine" gave me the opportunity to purchase all of these on one album. I love "Tales don't tell Themselves" but own nothing else by this band so would there be any pleasant surprises for me on these 2 discs ? Track 1 10.45 Amsterdam Conversations is a screamo track and did little for me but this was soon forgotten as Tracks 2 and 3 rushed by. This Year's Most Open Heartbreak shows what makes this band stand out from their peers. Yes it's a bit shouty/screamy but there is still a great tune here and then comes the fantastic Juneau. There are tracks I don't like but that's not the bands fault and I guess they would appeal to those who enjoy the heavier stuff. Nevertheless I have really enjoyed this album and can appreciate the music far more than I was expecting. Streetcar remains my favourite FFAF tune but other personal highlights include Escape Artists Never Die, Red is the New Black and Into Oblivion. Disc 2 includes a brilliant live performance of the Nirvanaesque "The System". "I am the Arsonist" and "The Letter" are acoustic numbers which demonstrates the guy can actually sing. This album will appeal to FFAF fans but also offers curious music fans with little or no knowledge of the band's sound an opportunity to explore a varied and exciting selection of their work. Glad I own it.

The greatest strength or the greatest weakness of Funeral for a Friend, has always been their diversity. Many of their earlier fans have sworn off their more recent material, denouncing it as not being 'Post hardcore' enough. But that very factor has attracted a new legion of fans who prefer the more rocky element they took with TDTT and (to a lesser extent) M&H. Your History is Mine has a glorious mix of tracks, from the very beginnings ('This Year's Most Open Heartbreak' still being my favourite song) to the more recent 'Kicking and Screaming'. The four new EP tracks are top notch and encompass the bands career with their diversity - 'Wrench' could quite easily be one of the better tracks from Casually Dressed. They hit a peak with the final new song from the album 'Captains of Industry', taking the catchy hooks from the earlier albums and the poppy guitars from recent works and blending them fantastically. The only moan this diehard fan has is Gavin's vocals - not that they're bad, but it's just not the same as Gareth is it?

The B-sides are all pretty entertaining, the acoustic version of Drive is a real treat in particular, though I'd heard many of the tracks before. If you were considering buying the album purely for the bonus material, I'd advise against it; it really is just a bonus.

As a guy who grew up with Funeral for a Friend never far from my CD player, this record really sums up my youth, from the age of fourteen onwards. Their history is mine and I couldn't have been happier with the Greatest Hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars This 2CD set is your FRIEND! 27 Mar. 2010

DISC 1, Tracks 1 - 12 are pre-released "best of" selection from FFAF's EP's and albums over the past 7 years. The selection is faultless (keeping in mind you have to have some from every album etc.) So if you don't know FFAF, this truly is the best starting point.

Tracks 13 - 16 are new, unreleased tracks! The "sound" of FFAF has evolved over the years, and all 4 tracks have a "sound" most like that of "Memory and Humanity." So if you old skool FFAF fans were after some early sounding stuff, sorry. But don't worry, all four tracks are AWESOME and still have the FFAF sound we've all come to love!

DISC 2 is 20 tracks, most pre-released as b-sides. The songs vary in style and production quality. The songs are listed in chonological order so they don't really "fit" together well. Even if they did list the songs from heavy/well produced to demo quality/acoustic the disc still wouldn't flow very well. But who still listens to the songs straight from the CD anyway?! Just alter your mp3 playlist to suit you! :)

The only way this b-side and rarities disc could be better is if they ditched some of the songs I've rated poorly below and replaced them for absent tracks like "Damage Inc." (Metallica cover - featured on "Remastered" a tribute to Metallica's 'Master of the Puppets" album), "Miracle of Christmas" (recorded for "A Taste of Christmas" compilation, "Crash and Burn" (the post-demo version - only available on the Japanese bonus track release of "Tales Don't Tell Themselves") and most of all "Juneau (acoustic)" - as seen/heard in their DVD "Spilling Blood in 8mm"

Below my song opinions rated from LEGENDARY > AWESOME > AVERAGE > BLAND > TERRIBLE

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection from one of the best bands ever 13 Oct. 2009
By J. Casey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
You get the added bonus of four brand new songs here, and they only included three songs from the past two blandish albums. The new songs are the real treat, new bass player is good and the song direction seems to be back on track.
