This is a very useful little book for anyone looking to make a living from writing books, whether traditionally published or self published, whether of fiction or non-fiction.

It outlines Mr Grahl's "Connection System" of marketing, which has 4 parts:

1) Permission
2) Content
3) Outreach
4) Selling

Mr Grahl explains his system clearly, and gives a lot of helpful advice for how to set up each of the elements of the system, along with plentiful examples of what sort of content to use, and so on. He also gives links to his website for his most up-to-date recommendations on the best technology to use, for example, to track your statistics, send out email newsletters, etc.

Each chapter is split into small sections - most less than a page - so you can read it in bite size chunks, whenever you have a few minutes spare. And the style of writing is conversational and easy to follow.

The book is very encouraging, and made me feel that this is something I could actually do.

I recommend this book. :)

I heard about Tim Grahl listening to a podcast. I was impressed enough by the information he shared on the podcast to go to his website and sign up for his mailing list. He has a 30 day course on building your author platform. I am used to email courses having been in internet marketing for a long time. What I am not used to is the value Tim delivered in the first two modules. I have no idea what the rest of his course covers as I haven't seen it yet but I am dying for his next email. I bought this book based on the quality of the free content and loved it. Sure it appears to be aimed at those that write non fiction but if you really believe that after reading the book, you need to go back and re-read it with an open mind. Okay building a list and providing content for historical fiction readers may be more difficult than providing content for those who want to lose weight. I can think of a dozen headlines and helpful stories to send out to readers of my losing weight book (if I had written one.) You need to think a little bit differently when it comes to providing content to readers of fiction no matter what genre you are in. But the basic principles that Tim outlines - yes they are basic but that is what makes them profound, works for every genre. All too often we are sent hyped up messages about how to get 10000000 fans or 200000 followers or pick a number on the next social media site. But they are just numbers. They are not your customers or your buyers. Your buyers/customers start with one name and build up from there. Buy this book - and apply the principles if you want to be successful.

Having signed up into Tim's emails I followed with excitement as he reached his challenge to get to 10000 sales. His level of detail is great but his personal approach comes across in all his communication points. The books good, but if you're not sure whether to buy just yet sign up to his emails on his site and pretty soon you'll see how effective his outreach is. If you're an aspiring author like me, his info helps set a clearer path for your sales development. So I found the book to be really useful in understanding how to fit the pieces together! Enjoy the process :-)

Have to be honest I've been in IT for 30 years and spent some of those as an internet marketer. If only I'd read this book back then.
Great insight into email lists and how they outperform social media. In fact how social media should take a back seat role in your marketing efforts.
That alone was worth 4 stars.
But there is much more in this book that needs to be read to be appreciated.

Contains a lot of high level ideas, but is a little lacking in specific techniques and examples. Would be good for a beginner, but I don't feel I read anything I hadn't already seen before.

This is a really thoughtful book. As the first reviewer has commented, the ideas in it are simple. It's the thinking behind them that makes this book valuable. I've read a lot of books for kindle authors and haven't really been sold on the whole platform-building thing. After reading this book, I see why I should do it and how I can do it effectively.

Definitely recommended.
