After nearly 8 years as an escort Hallen is starting to think about retiring. He has always loved art and is an Artist at heart. Then he escorts Laura to an Art Gallery. Laura at 48 is 20 years older than Hallen but he doesn't feel the age difference. In 8 years Hallen has only tried dating once and it only lasted 6 weeks. At this point in the story we see a different Hallen to the confident one we met in the first half. Now Hallen is vulnerable and insecure and falling in love for the first time in his life.
Laura is recently divorced from a husband who cheated on her and belittled her for most of their 27 year marriage. At the beginning of her and Hallen's relationship there are many times she hurts him with her words and actions. They have to try and overcome his past and her own insecurities.
For the main the story is told from Hallen's POV but towards the end we get Laura's POV. We see how she felt when she first met him etc. We learn why she has insecurities.
There are sex scenes in the book but I thought Hallen and Laura's sex scenes would be hotter than they were. The pacing of their story was good. The author wrote Hallen as a good guy.Read more ›
The detail that Jane has gone into regarding the business that Hallen was in and why he became involved in that business was mesmerizing and very thought provoking.
The first part of this book deals with who Hallen is and how he became an escort then we move onto who he becomes and why but firstly let’s start with the beginning.
Due to Hallen’s family heritage, he has the looks of a Swedish God, stunning blue eyes and blonde hair, even the description of him made my mouth water. Not having the easiest life growing up, Hallen knew what goals he wanted; he had a talent for art and the ladies, what a great combination if you ask me.
The early years were a struggle and Hallen did what he had to do to get by but it was while he was working at a bar that he was approached by Eliose to become an escort. Yes he was skeptical about the whole ‘Escort’ business, I mean who wouldn’t but he could make the rules as he went on as long as he worked for Eliose. Hallen was Eliose’s first employee and proved to be a very popular man, he knew what to do and he knew how to do it well especially going by some of the lines he came out with “What I’m saying is that standards were so low, it wasn’t difficult being the best these women had ever had. I’m not being arrogant….I just paid attention”.
To Hallen this was a means to live, to survive, it wasn’t without the drawback, Hallen had no social life, and he couldn’t exactly go around telling his friends what he was doing.Read more ›
together. First half of the book tells Hallens story as an escort then the love story follows. Thoroughly enjoyed this definitely a must read.
Reading ‘At Your Beck And Call’ reminded me why I don’t dish out 5 stars on a regular basis. It’s because it’s not often I’m blown away by a book like I was with this one. I read and review a lot but to get the final star has to evoke all of my senses and emotions. This certainly evoked them in abundance. In my opinion this is Jane’s best work since ‘The Education Series’. AYB&C is filled with emotions, it’s filled with humour, it’s filled with sadness and it’s bursting it’s seams with amusing and entertaining events.
The first half of the book we get to know every single detail about Hallen, the build from his college years right through to his late twenties was quite the ride. Jane left no stone unturned detailing his family structure and his friendships in depth. I wasn’t surprised as this is what Jane does best, she draws you into the storyline so you feel like you know the characters personally. To my surprise in this case I did!!
Jane in her infinite wisdom decided to write me into a rather raunchy sex scene with Hallen and two friends. I’ve never smiled so much in my life while reading. It was hot, funny, deeply erotic and very very naughty. What touched me deeply ( apart from Hallen’s d*** and both of my friends tongues ) was Jane’s ability to portray her friends and colleagues as characters throughout the book, yet still maintain a certain truth about their personalities. Yes she’s totally got us sussed! It was sheer brilliance.
Moving towards the halfway line Hallen started to really tug at my emotions, I could feel his loneliness inside. He was living in a dream world and living only in his clients fantasies, losing himself into their demands and needs. Everything in his life was uncertain and he was overcome with confusion.Read more ›
