I particularly wanted the Young Person's Guide and the Sea Interludes, and here they were at a great price, performed by an excellent orchestra under a very accomplished conductor: so, a no-brainer!

The recording quality is as good as anything in my collection, and the sense of presence at the performance is tangible. From the pianissimo passages to the all-out tutti crescendi, everyone involved in this production can be proud of the result.

I am on record as not being Britten's greatest fan, but here are three works which most people will enjoy. He was certainly a most inventive composer, and there is a great variety of thematic material and scoring to be enjoyed.

Recommended as a toe in the water for Britten's orchestral works, or as a Must Have for collectors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Andrew David-led performance of Britten orchestral works 3 Aug. 2012

If you are going to own just one Benjamin Britten disc, this one is a great candidate. Andrew Davis leads the BBC Symphony in a 1991 release containing both of Britten's most famous orchestral works, the Peter Grimes Sea Interludes & Passacaglia (1945), and the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (aka the Purcell Variations) (1946). The real discovery on this CD for me was the Frank Bridge Variations, a composition I had no awareness of when I acquired it. The Bridge Variations is a 25-minute long for string orchestra based on a theme by Britten's first teacher, written in 1937, when Britten was just 24. Britten's variations are imaginative, with an understated beauty, and a constant variety, both in terms of arrangements and thematic ingenuity. This may be my favorite Britten piece, despite its relative obscurity.

I am more familiar with the Peter Grimes Sea Interludes and the Young Person's Guide. Davis provides a particularly musical and sensitive interpretation, with very fine playing by the BBC orchestral musicians. I compared the Davis rendition to other versions, and found it to be a bit better than the classic performance by Andre Previn, and just much more expressive than the one by Steuart Bedford (both with the London Symphony). Davis is similarly compelling in a vivid performance of the Young Person's Guide, and the performance of the Bridge Variations is superb.

As usual with Teldec, the sound engineering is first class. This is an outstanding recording that I think you will love.

1.0 out of 5 stars " The music is beautiful. 8 Oct. 2014

For a young persons guide, I expected to hear some dialog for "the young person." The music is beautiful.
