RCA has come a long way in its presentation of their favourite son. Often ridiculed for their crass moneymaking reissues especially during the Eighties and Nineties - they upped their game big time for the Naughties and beyond on the quality front and began released a steady stream of reissues worthy of The King - the 18 UK No 1s CD Singles campaign and the Sony/Legacy Deluxe Edition reissues jump to mind. This 5CD Super Deluxe beauty is no different. Even in it's scaled down 'book' form (the more-affordable 2014 reissue) - there is a genuine classiness to this release and you have to tip a hat at the mega-company boffins because "Young Man With The Big Beat" is properly gorgeous to look at and to listen to. It's a full-on fan feast and about bloody time too. Here are the curled lips, greasy quiffs and gyrating hips...

Original released 27 September 2011 as a 12" x 12" full-priced (limited edition) 5CD Box Set on RCA Legacy 88697935342 (Barcode 886979353428) with various separated memorabilia inside the box - this 12 September 2014 mid-price reissue on RCA Legacy 88875006142 (Barcode 888750061423) comes in a 5CD 'Book Pack' with an 88-page attached booklet and breaks down as follows:

Young Man With The Big Beat was originally issued in a much larger, more lavish set found here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005AQ4O4W

All the musical content, five CDs in all, has been brought over intact from the original version. This is a cheaper, smaller configuration intended for thriftier consumers. This reissued set is a great value if you can live with its questionable packaging design. Unlike a lot of Elvis product floating around in Europe these days since his earlier work has hit the public domain, everything here is taken from officially-licensed studio masters remastered in excellent sound quality.

My two-star rating solely pertains to the packaging. It arranges three discs on top of each other to one side, and two discs on top of each other on the other side. The CDs are locked into place by ill-fitting holders, forcing one to flex a CD to remove it. It's a packaging design we've seen before on other European reissued box sets, including Richard Thompson at the BBC and others. Users will get frustrated removing and replacing discs, possibly leading to damage. I've already had to permanently remove the discs to separate jewel cases. It will be a nightmare for older consumers to deal with if they have any issues with their hands.

While the ergonomics are terrible, the packaging does feature crisp graphic art and photo reproduction. The middle section reproduces the bigger booklet found in the more expensive original box set by shrinking it down.

Excellant budget re-issue for all Elvis fans!-I already had the previous LP sized box set of 'Young Man With The Big Beat' with the artifacts and memrobillia but when I saw this so cheap on amazon I just had to order this re-issue budget release as it was so cheap and nice to own it in a smaller sized set.(my only 'gripe' about his version is the fact you do NOT get the collectable artifacts and memrobillia you got with the LP sized box set)All-in-all a must have for all Elvis and much cheaper than the official Elvis fan clubs.(some elvis fan clubs are charging £33 for this new set)I only paid £16.45 from amazon!!

1956. The year of the rock and roll revolution! I, like many other Elvis fans missed out on the original release when it was first published. My reason was that at the time, due to financial struggles I found it way too expensive for about 98% of material which I already had. also due to many other releases I was spending more of my time and money in buying. I was delighted when I saw the budget release on offer from Amazon. Realising that it was a cut down size with no reproduction items, it didn't bother me at all. Another reviewer states that the housing of the cd's would be difficult to take out, without damaging the outer box. I would recommend placing the cd's in protective sleeves and storing the box safe. I am not going to complain in the slightest as I knew what I was buying in the first place, and have several Elvis formats in my collection like this with the music in sleeves to avoid destroying the boxes. Great wee package, with no doubt the most important recordings that put Elvis well on his way to fame and fortune. And the rest is history.

This boxset compiles all of Elvis's studio masters from 1956, together with a pile of extras germane to the era. It overlaps with the 5-disc 1950's boxset AND the Legacy edition of Elvis's 1956 debut album, 'Elvis Presley', AND the FTD version of that first release AND the FTD version of The King's second album, 'Elvis'. It also treads on the toes of the single CD versions of those first two albums AND Elvis' Golden Records (volume 1). One marvels at BMG's relentless ability to deploy bonus songs as bait to resell the same core material in this fashion. Also, this set has already been released in more lavish packaging at an exorbitant price, before being reformatted here at less than half the cost. It's doubtful that purchasers of that earlier version will be feeling great when they see this edition for sale. Sometimes the music industry behaves with a cynicism that fuels online piracy, and this release is emblematic of such avarice. Commercial rapacity aside, the music here is frequently second-to-none (e.g., Heartbreak Hotel, Any Way You Want Me, Money Honey), and the studio cuts are in terrific sound. But this set also contains distorted live recordings and a stash of interviews. The Legacy version of 'Elvis Presley' includes the second album 'Elvis', and both are laden with bonus tracks. The audio quality is superb, and it's well worth a flutter. But for outstanding value, the 5-CD 'King of Rock and Roll' boxset is plainly the one for all but the most ardent completist to go for.
