It is a very comprehensive and comforting guide that takes you gently through each stage of pregnancy, utilising Chinese medicine principles in a very accessible way and approaching your pregnancy wellbeing from all angles: physical and mental.
I love the yoga sections and advice on using acupressure points, and the break down of various ailments you might encounter at each stage of your pregnancy, with tips on how to learn to balance the various physical demands of pregnancy to maintain a sense of serenity and calm about the birth.
This is a very nourishing and comforting guide, akin to having your own doula holding your hand throughout each stage of your pregnancy and counteracting many of the anxiety-creating issues that arise in daily life when you are pregnant.
I have loved dipping into this whenever I feel concerned about anything during these later stages of pregnancy, and have felt it to be a reassuring source of information and guidance. I am looking forward to using some of the tips during labour and beyond!
The first section is all about aiding conception - something we'd already achieved! Plus it was repetition from her other book which is simply didn't need.
The next sections are useful, going through each trimester and ideas of how to deal with common issues such as morning sickness and heart burn, but it felt it was lightweight. What I found the most useful was the 'fourth trimester' section after the arrival of my little one helping with how to prepare body for breast feeding and recover from pregnancy.
I hate to be critical as I loved the Baby Making Bible but if you already have that, then perhaps you don't need this. There are also other pregnancy books I'd recommend before this one. However if you don't have her first book and want a rounded view on how to look after yourself this is a well written researched book.
This book is packed with useful tips from breathing, to yoga positions, to recipes and much more. The book is interwoven with beautiful examples from Emma's own life and other pregnant women that it feels like having a positive friend with you at all times - a much needed antidote to the overwhelming advice and negative stories from well meaning family, friends and strangers! It's an empowering read!
I have contacted Emma Cannon regarding that advice and I am hoping that it will be changed. By the meantime, be weary.
