Another perfectly competent Little Axe album that touches all Skip McDonald's familiar bases, but therein perhaps lies its problem. Seven albums in, the formula may just be starting to wear a little thin.

Little Axe's first three albums, 'The Wolf that House Built' 'Slow Fuse' and 'Hard Grind' were extraordinary and truly groundbreaking releases, taking the blues to places it had never been before with the aid of some jaw-dropping samples. Even with Little Axe's unusual slant on the genre, maintaining that originality cannot be easy and, sadly, this time there are few real surprises as McDonald and his cohorts tread a now very well-worn path. So much so that some of the rhythm tracks on this album have even been recycled from earlier Adrian Sherwood / On-U Sound productions.

Much more dub-based than previous outings, you can't actually fault any of the tracks individually. But the overall impression you're left with at the end is of an artist content to tread water instead of riding the waves.

Perhaps it's time for Skip McDonald to step out of his comfort zone.

Really like Little 'Skip McDonald' Axe having 2 other albums. There is a touch of blues and reggae about his music style with an atmospheric overtone. Sounds better at night time.
