"A deeply emotional, dark and captivating read." - Kelly, Perusing Princesses

Wow! This book is no easy read but my goodness, does it pack a punch in all the right places! There is no denying it, this book is pretty dark, with glimpses of light and unfathomable beauty. A tale of family, sisterhood and survival.

You Loved Me At My Darkest does involve disturbing scenes of kidnap, captivity, violence and rape; like I said... No easy read, yet at the same time there is a welcome reprieve when our main heroine, Lily, starts to build a profound connection with her captive guard, Jake.

Immediately, I knew there was more to Jake than meets the eye but I had no idea how this story was to unfold and I must say, I was hooked from the first page. That prologue is not pretty but like the perfect erotic thriller, you can't look away and immediately I knew I was in for the long haul.

Lily and Sasha are the true testament that blood is thicker than water. When they are both kidnapped from their last vacationing day in New York City, this once-in-a-lifetime trip to help move on from the grief of losing both their parents, turns into every womans living nightmare. Lily, remains the rock for her younger sister Sasha, she will stop at nothing to protect her but when they get separated at a large mansion run by an evil sex trafficker, their chances of seeing each other again are slim, with escape a near impossibility.

Lily, the eldest and most beautiful is lavished with expensive clothes and a nice room, a prison draped in luxury as she becomes one of the 'special collection'.

Sasha on the other hand is put into the slave quarters. Her job is to not speak and do as her told.

When it comes to a debut novel there must be something in the water in Australia because Evie Harper has delivered what can only be described as a belter!!
You Loved Me at My Darkest is exceptionally well written, it is edge of your seat stuff, which will not only tug at your heartstrings but will leave both, your heart and your nerves slightly frayed round the edges.
Sister’s Lily and Sasha Morgan set out on the trip of a lifetime from Australia to travel the world after suffering the loss of not one but both parents.
But upon arrival in New York we discover that they are about to become intimately acquainted with not only the hand of fate but the stench of foul play.
Misery has sets its sights on them and the bringer of that misery Mario, sees the girls as nothing more than a commodity, his means of making money – their humanity means nothing to him and nor will it – but as much as the situation they find themselves in is far beyond the release of average comprehension – I considered it to a much more sobering scenario because as much as I found it abhorrent, I knew that Evie’s book was not a million miles away from what is a reality for many.
Lily determines that she needs to stand tall and be strong for both of them and that no matter what she will find them a way out. Foolish hope – well, isn’t that better than no hope at all. She refused to be beaten or broken by Mario – her will and spirit is hers to determine the fate of not him!

It was painful to get through this book. A valiant attempt by the author but the plot was paper thin, the characters were seriously unlikable and the storytelling could have been improved upon by my 4 year old.

The main did nothing but cry, which is pretty much all the women in this book did too. The men were all sex starved maniacs who captured women to sell to other men for sex. In addition to this, the lead characters sister is murdered (the guy she is in love with has a part to play in that) and she just sort of shrugs it off in the end by saying 'well she would have forgiven me so I have forgiven myself'?!

I thought this was poorly written. It felt clumsy. I found the use of sentences like this: do.not.open.your.mouth. used repeatedly and so lost impact of the use of the full stops. The theme of the book covered a really awful and relevant topic but the writing didn't do it justice. I found I didn't care about the characters or connect with them in anyway. There was no depth to the story. I wouldn't waste my time reading it.

I've read a few of these type genre and sometimes they're not particularly written well. Too much emphasis on sex to the point it gets silly. I found this book was sensitively written while still being sexy. Sometimes the cliche sex scenes and talk would creep in but definitely not overkill. I would definitely consider reading another book by this author. This book contains non consensual sex and death while still including the feels.
