Like Lemony Snicket with a little Monty Python. --LA Weekly
About the Author
Pseudonymous Bosch is a pseudonym, or as he would prefer to call it (because he is very pretentious), a nom de plume. Unfortunately, for reasons he cannot disclose, but which should be obvious to anyone foolhardy enough to read this book, he cannot tell you his real name. But he admits to a deep-seated fear of mayonnaise.

The plot involves a girl called Cass, who is a survivalist who has never yet had to survive anything. Her and a new friend Max-Ernest get themselves mixed up with a symphony of smells, an odd couple who look too perfect to possibly be true, and consequently a quest to rescue a boy from a terrible fate at the hands of the eternal youth seekers at the Midnight Sun Spa.
I found the book interesting and original but somehow it just wasn't much of a page turner. There are four more books in this series, which I think shows in the first one a bit too much. Mysteries are left very much uncovered and sub plots not developed.
I don't mean to sound too critical, I definitely would recommend this book to children, it's just for me it didn't cross that 'for children but also really for adults' line. Which is, of course, fine!
My 9 year old and I are reading our way through all 5 books together and she really identifies with Cass. Geekish boyus would identify with Max-Ernest and more active boys with Yo-yoji.
Great sense of humour too.
Highly recommended for a practical child (boy or girl) - no princesses, but lots of adventure.
