You Don't Need a Self-Help Book: Replacing the Shelf with Yourself Kindle Edition
Most Helpful Customer Reviews on Amazon.com (beta)
The author has a sense of humor, though it's not for the saintly variety of mind. I'm not likely to be accused of sainthood, so it just seemed funny to me.
But the few points are pretty much dead on about "self-help" books. Change is hard work, and most people reading self-help books don't have the persistence to follow what mediocre advice is offered. If they attempt to follow it, they discover quickly the world doesn't follow the patterns promised by the anecdotal "evidence" the books are built on.
If you're inclined to pay for self-help books, then this book could save you a lot of money. If you can get free ones, or borrow them, go ahead and read them until you get your fill, and discover what the author states at least implicitly: "You already have what you need as a human being to deal with life, and your time is better spent exploring and developing that capacity in yourself rather than trying to dream someone else's solutions."
After you read the book, look closely at the 5 star reviews and laugh again.
Highly recommend reading this book.
