Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots does not look like the type of single I would normally pick up on a shelf, but it is by far the best song I have heard in a long time. I caught it on the radio last week for the first time and was blown away. I had to find out right away who it was by.
The lyrics are clever and funny (but unpretentious) and the tune is melodic and catchy. This is not a "too-cool-to-make-sense" song for young people only. This is pop at it's enjoyable best.
I'm now hungry to hear more of "The Flaming Lips". The single has prompted me to buy the album!

His name was Jack Toye,
He's an eager Flaming Lips Fan.
Working in a dull job,
he has to listen to good music.
Cause he knows that,
It'd be tragic,
If that evil workplace won.
I know he can beat them.
Oh Yoshimi, yeah what a class song.
I wont let bad reviewers defeat me,
Yoshimi, yeah what a class song.
I will buy this single right now...Yoshimi.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (Part1) is as great as previous single Do You Realize?- you know, the song that was #1 in a parallel universe where people exhibit taste. It advances into poppier climes than the previous material on The Soft Bulletin (1999)- but goes where songs like Race for the Prize & Waitin' for Superman were heading. Sonically speaking this is somewhere between a hip-hop song, the heavenly strings of previous Lips releases, the greatest pop song ever written, a superb ode to a member of The Boredoms etc. Brian Wilson meets DJ Shadow (kind of); this version comes with a superb Japanese version of Yoshimi & a remix of Do You Realise? My only quibble is the price & length of singles since the 20 minute rule/no more than 3 tracks (unless remixes) came in- you may as well spend a few quid extra & get the wonderful Yoshimi album- & then hear such greats as Fight Test, It's Summertime & One More Robot. With advice like that, it's not even get to #1 in a parallel universe!

hardly worth buying since you can get the remix on fight test now, but the japanese version is kinda funny to listen to once or twice. glad i have it for my collection, but not for the casual lips fan.
