Forget the 'Rough Guides', Lonely Planet is brilliant! I took this to NYC and found it invaluable. The maps are really easy to use and I love the little narratives at the front. I've gone back to this book loads of times since getting back, and have found new places that I wish I'd have gone to. I'm planning on going back in September, and this time we're going to Philadelphia (only a 2 hour bus trip from NYC), there's great information about excursions in the back of this book too if you're there for long enough. Enjoy NYC, just don't forget your comfy shoes!!!

We were lucky enough to be able to travel to NYC from the UK and only wi th a few weeks notice. With this in mind I quickly purchased the most up to date copy a guide I could find and started reading. I reckon it's best to take a good luck at the maps (detatchable ones in back) and orientate yourself with the main sights and places to go. Then scan the book and list what you would like to see and then plan your days accordingly and go visit these places. There is lots of info for any place you can think of so just read up before you go. Good value, also speak to as many New Yorkers as you can and ask them what to see and where to go, they're very friendly and helpful. Enjoy NYC!

I went to New York recently for the first time and had this guide with me. My friend had the Times New York guide. Together they worked out fine but without one or other, we would have struggled.

The positives about this book is that it has been published very recently. The old favourites like Statute of Liberty don't change but because of recession and gentrification much of the city is changing and this book is good on Brooklyn and other more cultural areas. It has detailed passages on the history of many attractions and contains very good maps for orienation.

The negatives. I would have liked more pictures. It would have been nice to have the shopping, eating and visiting sections for each area in the same place rather than having to flick back and forth to see what to visit and then having to go to another section to seen nearby areas to eat.

I think there are few books that would probably manage to cover all of New York well but this makes a decent stab.

found it much more useful then the time out NYC guidebook. Went to a couple of suggested bars which were fun. the pull out map is particularly useful.
However, NYC is a city you want to get lost in so don't get the guidebook out too often!

I have used this guide book during my trip to NY and I have enjoyed reading it during my flight.

However, once there, I have noted that one of my friends had a ROUGH Guide to NY. After comparing the two, I have realised that the Rough Guide one was more readable, user friendly, more colourful - hence allowing important information to be found quickly, and had a better city map.

While the Lonely Planet book is very complete, if you need a guide book where you can find QUICKLY information about history, restaurants, etc. you'd better buy something else. Of course, this is a very personal feedback.

Found this book to be excellent research companion, with good recommendations, hints and tips. The small pull out map in the back is useful when you are wandering round Manhattan trying your best to not look like a tourist.

No guide book can really prepare you for the NYC subway system. The signs are poor, I got a bit lost a few times. This is maybe the only area this guide falls a little short on.

This was a helpful starting place when finding your bearings in this city.
Detailed area maps are - as always - priceless.
The only problem we found was that with so many choices of places to go, eat, drink or sleep in, there is no way they could all be included. Unfortunately I feel that a few gems have been missed out....

The general content of this book is good, there were some great tips and we saw some great places. Though the drawback was that it was at times somewhat difficult to navigat. The book is divided into sections based on the location and then activities by locaation eg; shopping, eating, drinking etc. the problem was that you often had to flick between sections to find information jumping around across the book to find maps. If you knew the area of town you were in you would probably find the book useful though if like me you tend to meander the streets ending up somewhere you didn't expect I found that it was tricky to work out where you were and what there was to do in that area as you were flicking from the front to the back of the book. AS mentioned the tips were great and there was some really good information if you could find it, it just needs to be a little more user friendly.
