Product Description

Product Description

Almost as manic as the radio show from where they originated, the music that featured in and around The Goon Show has developed a cult status all of its own. As with the radio show itself, much of the music came from the pen and mind of Spike Milligan, one of the greatest comic geniuses Britain has ever produced. I'm Walking Backwards For Christmas was originally performed by Spike in one show as a fill in during a musicians' strike, yet would go on to become a surprise Top Ten hit in 1956 when released as a single. The 'group' scored another Top Ten smash with Bloodnock's Rock N Roll Song backed with Ying Tong Song, with the latter subsequently returning to the Top Ten when reissued in 1973. As a bonus (and to pad the album out a bit) we've also included two Peter Sellers' tracks in Any Old Iron and Boiled Beef And Carrots, with the former a Top 20 hit in 1957.

I'm old enough to be familiar with most of these songs. I have some ancient cassette versions of Goon shows etc with some songs on. I hoped these would be a better copy than I have already. Not so.
The songs sound as if they have been recorded from a short-wave radio using a microphone at the end of a drainpipe! They are badly distorted and phasey sounding. I think this is due to an over enthusiastic "engineer" with a noise reduction plug-in on Sound Forge or similar. This has been done to lower the tape hiss from the original BBC recordings. If these programs are used too aggressively, then the result sounds as I have described. The BBC would not be amused (as I am not). I'm surprised that Hallmark can get away with this sacrilege.

Don't buy this version! As the earlier reviewer states, the sound quality is awful. Sounds like some amateurish attempt has been made to add stereo effects to the original recordings. I am returning my copy!

The previous reviewer and the commentator on that review are not very knowledgeable about what they commented on. These are not from the BBC radio programs, these are from commercial phonograph records recorded by and issued by Decca and Parlophone. So there is no reason at all to drag the BBC in on this by saying that they would not be amused. It is DECCA which have issued these on THEIR CDs who would not be amused!!

Wonderful songs from my youth but unfortunately the recording quality is very poor. It sounds like it was re-recorded from a very worn out record.
