The range and quality of the work presented here is quite stunning; the drawings and designs are well-reproduced in full-colour throughout and these make up practically the entire book – texts are limited to a brief introduction and a few pages by way of commentary placed at relevant stages in the chronology.
The high standards of draughtsmanship, design and imagination make this a very widely appealing book, as interesting – I should think - to artists, illustrators and fashionistas as well as those involved in the actual business of clothes design. Certainly an essential reference for any fashion student.
This is a excellent volume, an extremely useful resource, guide and an all-round pleasure to look through.
There are 400 hundred fashion images in which are selected from between the 1900's to the 21st century. Each page contains a striking and stunning drawing with information about the artist and where known about the media that was used. As it contains many drawing from many different eras and it is a great chance to see how fashion and fashion illustration has changed over the last 100 years.
I would highly recommend this book to not only fashion students but to anyone who is interest in drawing or illustration, as it presents an exhibition of exceptional and precious drawings that are made as fashion illustrations. When reading this book I thought it was not only a document of the evolution of fashion but it was like a visual time line of illustrators and there techniques, materials and styles. It has a fantastic observation of detail, style and approach, which are all crafted in an excellent way. The evidence is in the drawings and paintings.
It is a great chance for you to see artists work that are often over looked and for me some fashion illustrations that I have never seen or artist that I hadn't heard of before. It has helped me within my studies, not only for inspiration but the information it holds is genuinely good.
The book is well produced and put together but I wish that they would have sold one that was hardback rather than just paperback because as an art student I transport this book to and from university quite a lot to use for inspiration therefore it is more inclined to bend or rip. On the other hand the size of the book is perfect and is not overwhelming but contains enough information that keeps you interested along with the imagery and colours. The front cover is just a taste for what is to come and it is definitely one to buy!
