* "Lin does a remarkable job capturing the soul and spirit of books like those of Hayward or Maud Hart Lovelace, reimagining them through the lens of her own story, and transforming their special qualities into something new for today's young readers."--Booklist, starred review

i HAD to buy this for my 2 children Not only was it written in an engaging style but it also tells the story of an 'ordinary' girl (she doesen't have any magical powers or other fantasy qualities.) We started off with the book 'Dumpling Days' by Grace Lin, as we were going to Taiwan in the holidays. Just like Grace/Pacy in that book. After my daughters had finished that book, she immediately decided to buy the next book, 'The Year Of A Dog.' This Grace Lin series taught both me and my kids so much about the chinese Culture and traditions. This really is a great read !!!!!!!!
We are now looking for other books by Grace Lin in the same series.

At least in the books I’ve read (this series and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon), Lin tells the main story with short stories/legends interspersed. They are very short, so the reader doesn’t lose track of the main plot.
I’ve read both serieses aloud with fourth graders, and they’ve loved them. I love to start a series in small group rotations and then offer the rest of the series for the kids to read. I’ve had kids finish the rest of the series on their own.
