For last few years I have been running a KEF Kube sub along side a KEF soundbar via a Yamaha AV receiver, it's a great sub and puts out living room shaking bass, but I'm in the process of re-organising my living room and the KEF sub is a little too obtrusive for the new look.

I spent a little time looking for a discreet sub, something that could be tucked away in my AV cabinet, and I found the Yamaha YSTFSW050BL. Dimensionally the Yamaha was a perfect fit in my cabinet, an inch bigger in any direction and it would have been too big for the space I had available. The sub looks good too, it's no longer hidden behind a sofa so it was important that it was attractive. The build quality is pretty good for a sub in this price bracket, even though it's facia is plastic, it feels like a quality piece of kit, and for it's small size its deceptively heavy.

From the beginning I was under no illusions that downgrading from my much bigger KEF sub would mean that I would have to sacrifice some of the meaty bass, and to a degree lose the quality sound that KEF produces, and I was right. The Yamaha sounds pretty good for such a small enclosure, but it's a little weak, if you want your walls to shake during action movies this sub may disappoint. When the volume on the Yamaha is set to 100% volume it is the equivalent to my KEF being on 25%. For general TV viewing it's fine, I can happily have it on all day as does most things reasonably well, but it does nothing spectacular, however I would much rather have this sub than have no sub at all.

There are couple of downsides though.

I went for this model as I liked the idea of not having to place it on the floor so it annoys my neighbours below. The unit feels and is very well made and stylish. Setting it up is a doddle for your amp it comes supplied with the phono lead to connect it to your amp (it also comes along with a switching cable meant for yamaha amps to auto turn the amp off).

The Sound it produces is fantastic, things have a weight to them, for instance light sabers in Star Wars sound more menacing and deadly, the distant rumble of the spacecrafts engines make you feel like you are onboard.

There is also little to no vibration coming from the case so things are not going to annoy you by rattling or buzzing.

Highly recommended.

I initially purchased a YAS-101 Soundbar for my new LED TV, after finding that the built-in speakers on my new TV were a little underwhelming. The soundbar was brilliant - good bass (both low and mid range) great treble and outstanding audio clarity too. After a few days I decided to take it one step further and purchase this subwoofer.

The beauty of this subwoofer is that it works hand in hand with the YAS-101 soundbar. Switch on the soundbar and the subwoofer comes on. Switch off the soundbar and the subwoofer turns off. Added to this was the fact that this was the only kit that I could find that worked with the TV's original remote control, as it effectively reads the on/off and volume down and volume up signal transmitted from your TV remote to control the soundbar/subwoofer - nice!

In terms of performance, the output of bass from this unit is just amazing! It has enough poke to fill a medium to large size room with rich bass, without sounding boomy or rattly at all. The unit is made from a mixture of wood and sturdy plastic so it is virtually rattle free and well made/designed! Some subwoofers that I have tried have been punchy enough to deliver low range signals but absolutely pathetic at producing mid range bass. This is the best of both worlds - which I truely appreciate!

Really pleased with my setup and could not ask for any better! 5 stars, without a shadow of a doubt :)

Fantastic, sub especially for the price. I bought it due to its shape, quite often powered subs are a big cube and difficult to fit anywhere in your room. This is a similar width to a sky box and twice as deep, it fits snugly under my sideboard and produces a really nice deep sound. I've connected mine to an onkyo amp, I'd say the only downside to this sub is that it doesn't have an auto power on feature, you have to get up and manually switch it on, however you may not always want / need the subwoofer on so its swings and roundabouts really.

Definitely gets my vote, feels pretty well made, and looks great.

Gets the thumbs up from me.

The bass is good, deep but unobtrusive, as I like it. You forget it is on until you switch it off and the overall sound seems to lose a lot of depth. The form factor is ideal for me, also.

On the minus side, the "on" switch is manually operated, and it never switches off by itself, so that's a bit of a pain. You need a Yamaha amplifier to switch it off remotely. You'll have to put a remotely controlled power plug to avoid that inconvenience, or just get used to the continuous, although probably minimal, power consumption.
