Product Description

Yacht Rock is a term that refers to a golden age of American artists from late 70s and early 80s, whose focus was on making studio magic. Bands like Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oates, Toto and The Eagles, whose members had a history in session work, and who held recording prowess in the highest regard.

Having once being knocked as a kind of yuppie cheese, Yacht Rock is enjoying something of a renaissance. The sounds are escapist, soulful and smooth, with huge harmonies and intricate studio mastery so precise it makes the eyes water. Skill is something that s undeniable amongst the Yacht Rock greats - musicianship was a huge part of the scene. It even inspired a pastiche mockumentary , originally aired on American station 101 with a bad on purpose aesthetic and a cult following. This album acts as the perfect introduction to Yacht Rock , and brings together the best artists from the genre.

It's an odd thing about human beings that we feel the need to pigeon hole things. The term 'Yacht' rock is completely meaningless. This loose collection seems to cross the boundary into limp 70s soul of Fat Larry's Zoom & EW & F's After the love has gone, to the danceable sound of Lionel Richie & All night long, Shalamar's I can make you feel good & The Average White Band's Let's go round again. I have the latter on a DISCO collection elsewhere! In no way can Manhattan Transfer's Walk in love be termed rock - Yacht or otherwise. Never-the-less there are some gems here that rarely crop up anywhere & I am happy to have this collection. One ironic & annoying footnote though, is the absence of Steely Dan who are arguably the epitome of this 'sound'. Becker & Fagen are mentioned on the inside cover & yet don't appear as a band here (?)!

Four score and seven days we'd been adrift on the fickle ocean - nothing but ships biscuits and brackish rain water for the main share of it and that all gone now. The whale had returned in the night with murder in his heart. Had it not been for Perkins' sacrifice I fear I would not be writing this now - God rest his soul. By His grace we recovered the poor lad's battered corpse and gave him the last rites. 'Fetch the CD', the captain had said, 'fetch me down Yacht Rock and play it for this worthy soul'.

The soft strains of Chicago drifted out on the morning breeze: 'If you leave me now, you take a way the biggest part of me...'

As one, sixteen burly seamen echoed '...oooooo no, baby please don't go...'

I admit no shame but I shed a tear at that.

'Crack open the last cask of urine', the captain cried as the curiously apt 'Take The Long Way Home' came on the stereo. By the time Average White Band's 'Let's Go Round Again began, we were all ready to do just that

In the 70s and 80s people like me were too busy with punk, indie, electro and rap to bother buying the music formerly known as AOR (plus of course, in those days I didn't have the budget). It may not have been cool at the time (though some of it was), but that doesn't mean it wasn't any good. In fact many of these recordings were made on very high budgets in the best studios with the best musicians - and it shows. Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories", for example, was a homage to this era and the painstaking way some of these records were made. Anyone who has never yearned to hear at least some of the selections on here isn't a true music fan in my opinion (unless they're Morrissey). "Yacht Rock" contains most of the tracks you (sometimes unspokenly) liked at the time but never quite got round to buying, or never needed to buy because they were on the radio or MTV so often - Fat Larry's Band "Zoom", anyone? OK so maybe some of it's a little over familiar - Boston's "More Than A Feeling" for example but there are more hits than misses, and it's chock full of songs that you didn't know you knew. Virtually every track must have been on the soundtrack of "Miami Vice" (the TV series) at one time or another - hence the CD cover, I presume. If this album only contained Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" and Bruce Hornsby's "The Way It Is" my happiness would be complete.

It's now officially hip to be square, not that it ever wasn't. Roll on volume 2?

The term yacht rock was, it seems, originally intended as an insult, but music that might once have been described as soft rock, adult oriented rock, American rock or seventies rock is the basis of what is apparently now described as yacht rock. I won't even attempt to differentiate between the categories, but having been attracted by the title, I liked this compilation enough to buy it.

Most of the songs should be familiar even if you don't instantly recognize them from the titles. Most of the artists are American, with a few Brits. Most of the artists are men, with a few women. Most of the tracks are of a very high quality. Going into detail about them all seems pointless.

This is a great compilation, whatever the title. Whoever invented the term yacht rock, intending it to be an insult, must be gutted that the term - and the music - have been accepted.

This compilation does not really throw up any surprise choices for this genre of music, but rather goes for the safe, comfortable choices of music familiar to lots of people. Which is no bad thing, given that most of the time you will probably be playing this `in the background', as mood music or whatever.

As always, I would suggest that you read through the track listing for all three CDs, to see if it really is something that fits in with your tastes. Also, as this is available as an MP3 download, listen to the samples of the tracks, just to remind yourself of the tracks. For those of us who cannot be bothered to create our own compilations any more, albums like this, at this sort of price, are a sensible purchase.

It is more weighted to American artists from the 70s, but works none the less. One nice surprise was to find Morning Dance by SpyroGyra included, who are a group that are probably little remembered now. This compilation is not just AOR tracks but more chilled out middle of the road tracks as well, giving an easy listening selection.

I just can't bring myself to give it 5*, as it does not totally `hit the mark' for me, and is missing a few 'definitive tracks' but a decent effort for all of that.

Enjoy!
