Let me start with the delivery. Ordered 31st August-2016.
Initially the forecast delivery date was Wednesday 7 September. Lo and behold, the item was delivered on Sunday (yes, that's right, Sunday) 4th September.
I took my time in testing it. But I checked the box contents immediately I received it just to ensure all items were included.
On Monday I proceeded to setup and test (when family had gone about their daily tasks so I had enough time and space).
First thing I did was to ensure firmware was up to date. I realised that the coiled cable included in the box actually had micro USB at both ends: one to plug into the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT, the other end to plug into the USB port of the computer. Hmm. Scratched my head. Fortunately I remembered that the Canon 5D Mark III had a micro-to-proper-USB end so I used it instead.
Connected successfully and updated the device with no problems. You have to look around on google for a link to the landing page for firmware because Yongnuo home page is all in Japanese.
Anyway, ready to configure and test.
Yongnuo YN-E3-RT (+2 batteries)
Canon 5D Mark III
Canon Speedlite 600EX III-RT (+4 batteries)
Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT (+4 batteries)
Config setup was easy. Why? Loads of YouTube clips showing step by step

Testing was successful and I'm happy with this purchase.
If I need more Speedlite strobes / flash I will definitely consider buying a Yongnuo one (reasonably cheaper than top branded version).
I've been wary for a long time of non-Canon accessories and this (along with the YNE3-RX) is the first I've bought in quite a while, but I think that on the grounds of price alone this purchase was a no-brainer. This Yongnuo YN-E3-RT unit has so far proved to be perfectly reliable and it appears to be solidly made and nicely finished off - I'm very pleased with it and I'm happy to recommend it.
I have now used the YN-E3-RT with my 5D MkIII, 1D MkIV and my wife's 70D along with a 600EX-RT and 580EX MkII (with YNE3-RX). the first thing to do is to check and update the firmware, where necessary, on both TX and RX. This can prove a little awkward as there is no OS X support, so it must be one via a Windows machine.
The build quality, whilst not in the same league as Canon, is more than acceptable-especially given the price point! It is not 'weather sealed' as per the Canon ST-E3-RT, but at a little more than 1/5 of the price of the Canon product (in UK), I would not expect it too be. I certainly am not going to mark it down for that!!! A couple of important (to me) features, over the ST-E3-RT, are the focus assist light and the second curtain sync.
The interface is the same as that on my 600EX-RT so is very easy to use, I don't have to learn another system and it integrates perfectly. The buttons, switches and dials all work fine and it pairs quickly with both the 600EX-RT and YN-E3-RT.
I would recommend this item to anyone wanting to expand their system and creativity whilst saving over canon prices.
In fact, I am so impressed I'm beginning to wonder if it may be worth trying their replacement for the Canon 600EX speedlite.
