Recent firmware update (1.7 from 1.4) from xiaoyi addresses photo RAW issue I mentioned in my review. I am happy to report that the camera now supports raw+jpg option and records RAW in .dng format. However there is almost 10 sec delay in saving the RAW+jpg files to the camera (I use a fast Sandisk extreme U3 card btw). I hope this to be improved in future updates. Also more shutter time options are also available. I must say whatever little the camera is lacking the developers are making up for it by constantly providing features that consumers request. Props to Yi for that
Great value action cam with plenty of features. I ended up with Yi 4k after trying other action cameras, especially the rugged ones like Olympus tg tracker and Garmins Vibre XE. I was a little put off by the plastic construction and lack of rugged features without a case. However I was won over by the specs and performance at the price. Getting the waterproof case kind of overcomes the lack of ruggedness as well.
Huge capacity battery and lasting battery life
good range of resolution and framing options along with FPS ranging from 120Fps at 1080 p
In camera fish eye removal ( Normal and Ultrawide modes)
Smooth and easy to use touch screen
Stabilisation in built at resolutions lower than 4k
Heavy plastic construction and feel
Occasional jitters when stabilisation is used (This is common and expected but hopefully some firmware updates can fix it)
Lack of RAW format for photos (There are some hacks to generate RAW files from Yi cameras out there already so I dont see why they dont make it a feature in built.
Advanced shutter / exposure controls be useful. Currently only WB, max ISO can be manually set)
I would recommend this product as its relatively cheap and records good quality videos as well. The accompanying app is also very quick to connect with and offer a range of camera control over WiFi.
It is the old model so probably will not compete with the newer action cameras but as it was heavily discounted it is good value for money.
I found it easy to use and had no problem connecting it up to the android app which makes setup very easy.
Picture quality is good enough for what it is, though I will not be throwing away my SLR. Detail is compromised by the wide angle lens so you can only read number plates when they are close but that is more a problem with physics than with the camera.
Booting up time is quick so the camera is ready to use in a couple of seconds.
I haven't had any problems with battery life. I believe it is a couple of hours but I haven't yet run it for that long.
I use it as a dash cam using a old dash cam mount which has a standard camera tripod mount screw. The camera is mounted upside down and will auto invert the image, though this has to be turned on in the settings.
Little niggles are that it is too easy to switch on accidentally and the USB cover is fiddly and gets in the way when you are trying to plug the lead in.
Anyone considering buying on of these should check out the videos on You Tube but don't get confused by the newer model.
