3.0 out of 5 stars works if the sun is not to bright, then ... 9 Mar. 2015

works if the sun is not to bright, then for some reason stops charging and you have to shade the solar panel abit to get it working again. Have used in pakistan as the power is randomly on and off, I use it to charge a USB battery and use that to charge my phone

4.0 out of 5 stars all good 18 Nov. 2013
I use this 5 w cell for extended backpacking trips. Having tried all the utterly useless smaller ones that promise, yet completely fail...I eventually settled on this. FYI, it weighs 450 grams, 310 without case. There is a smaller version of this which does work equally as well in bright sunlight. However, this one still has enough oomph to charge on overcast and cloudy days . The 3 watt model does not, though if you have guaranteed sun...3 watt is adequate. The front of the cell is bonded safety glass..mine eventually cracked when I sat on it. However, the cell still works perfectly. I wild camp in some fairly harsh conditions. This is not unbreakable but you would need to try really hard to do lasting damage. As with all things solar, it works best with correct alignment and angle to the sun...all panels are very fussy and the difference between working brilliantly and barely is not much. Not the panel`s fault...just the way solar works. It has a marginally higher output without the cover but its about 15 mA...not enough to make any difference of note. One thing i`ll need to look into is the blocking diode...they say there is one there but i am not sure. This would stop your battery discharging through the panel at night for example if you left it plugged in. It should not do this but it does. Thats a flaw...so you can`t possibly give this 5 stars. I have converted my head torch to a usb rechargeable as well so this does my samsung galaxy note and my night lighting. I would not go camping without it. If you understand its limitations...it will be a great addition for your backcountry kit. charging time completely depends on conditions and the size of your battery. It will charge a 1500maH phone battery in 2 hours of direct sunlight...very close to its claimed output.

Great for recharging gadgets at a festival. Recommend pairing it with a usb power bank so it will charge up all day while wandering around and then you can recharge your phone when you need it.
