I love the character of Xander, he is a total alpha male, very complex who is completely used to manipulating everyone around him to get his own way. To see him finally meet his match with Jessi, a woman who he cannot mindread who manages to out fox him several times in a cat and mouse way was awesome... I was hooked completely from the first few pages, the background information was perfect - not too long but full of relevant information.
In summary great plot, great characters and very well written
Jessi is a young woman trying to raise to teens by herself and is confronted by The Black God and coerced into stealing from Xander, the original vampire. Xander lives on the fringe of the Guardians and Gods, not really wanting anything to do with them and he knows that Jessi is up to something.
The author has created a unique supernatural world full of suspense and romance with action and surprising twists. The characters are strong with a lot of depth and their personalities leap off the pages. The great storyline flows smoothly from one scene to the next thoroughly engaging the reader.
The romance builds throughout the book as Jessi fights her attraction to Xander, not only because she knows that she is going to betray him, he is all about the one night stands. The courtship of these two is enough to keep the reader entertained, but then you add in the conflict between the supernaturals and you have a highly captivating story that you can't put down until it is finished.
This series is a continuation of the War of Gods series and can be read without reading the War of Gods series. The author supplies enough of the previous story for the reader to pick up the storyline and go forward. She provides the information without confusing the reader or detracting from Xander and Jessi's story. Although, I if you haven't read the War of Gods, I do recommend them and I will certainly be looking forward to reading more of Damien Eternal in the future.
Xander’s Chance is the spin-off from the War of Gods series. The earlier series was centered around Damian, The White God and his Scoobie-Gang and ends with the Grey God’s story. REALLY if you are going to appreciate this story in it’s fullness you should do your homework and read the previous saga because you really have to learn how it is that Jessi comes to find herself in a situation where she is sent to be with Xander and why it matters. I could explain it to you much better than I’m about to, but honestly, you should read the books. Long story short though…
There is a White God, Grey God and a Black God in the mortal world. Jessi’s very young, unfortunate, run-with-the-wrong-crowd cousin is “saved” by a skeevy teen named Jonny who gives her Jessi the mission: Get Xander’s necklace with the red gem. Simple enough; Muhahaha!Read more ›
Xander has existed for a very long time, he is a very powerful, self servicing, egotistical control freak who manipulates everything and everyone around him to get what he wants, that is until Jessi, not only can he not control her but he can't even get a read on her. So when she shows up at his door, clearly with an agenda. He's found a challenge for the first time in his long life. She intrigues him, infuriates him and he will use everything in his arsenal to get to the truth. This book has everything you've come to expect from a classic Lizzy Ford book, great story, interesting well-rounded likable characters and Lizzy's quirky little humour that never fails to entertain.
If you haven't read any of Lizzy's books before or the original Damien Series, that's ok, this book can be read as a stand alone, however I would definitely recommend you read the first four books as well, because they are just fantastic.
