Stephen Palmer has often turned out work that is thought provoking, filled with different ideas that really make the reader think, this short story (set in the same world has his latest novel Hairy London) is a little different, for want of a better word it is fun, a rollicking good read.

Set in an alternate world, similar to ours but totally different it sees members of the infamous Suicide Club, gentlemen of daring do in an analogous Victorian England, trying to outdo one another in adventures that are so extreme they might be considered suicidal.

Two members team up then, to traverse the globe and find the mysterious city of Xana-La, to seek out old mysteries and find secrets.

Of course there is a rather unexpected twist, and the whole thing turns out to be something more than just an adventure, but the ending is a slightly uneasy one making you wonder…

It is a well written, fun read that has left me waiting to read Hairy London (whenever I might get around to it).

De javu, Mysteriously trying to find utopia with a little intrigue. A more romantic reader may enjoy especially with a love of the ethereal.
