Complete collected episodes of the Granada series about a former cat burglar hired by British intelligence. William 'Spider' Scott is a former break and enter specialist discovered by the national intelligence agency who deem that his extraordinary skills could be put to good use. He is sent on a series of missions but has trouble going straight. The series posits that someone with XYY syndrome - a real condition - is predisposed to criminal character, which, in fact has been proven nonsense but was suspected at the time. Episodes included: Series 1; 'The Proposition', 'The Execution' and 'The Resolution'. Series 2; 'Friends and Enemies', 'The Missing Civil Servant', 'The Big Bang', 'At the Bottom of the River', 'When We Were Very Greedy', 'Now We Are Dead', 'Whisper Who Dares', 'Law and Order', 'The Detrimental Robot' and 'A View to a Death'.

The series follows the adventures of Spider Scott (Yardley) a reformed cat burglar with an uncanny knack of being able to climb in and out of the tallest building with the presence of a nimble cat.
Hot on his heels is a cop (Henderson) and an array of gangsters the secret service unscrupulous aristocrats and his demanding lover Magie.
All eager to secure Scots profitable services for their own agenda.
The dialogue and settings are colorful and rich in character and there are lot of familiar faces to fans of seventies television. Yardley gives a star turn worthy of the big screen playing a likable character, a contrast to the characters he is remembered for playing in Howard's way and the secret army
Worth watching as an escapist fantasy with an urban context. If you like Callen the Sweeney old Bogart films or anything written by Trevor Preston then this will be your cup of tea.
Better then any of the over inflated nonsense that makes up today's TV dramas
Stephen Yardley is perfectly cast as the main protagonist who really draws you into the story. Amusing to spot Peter Ellis (Ch Supt Brownlow - The Bill - Series 1-3 - Complete [DVD]) in a role as a local pub landlord eight years prior to his ongoing role in the Thames police series.
Network have provided a wonderful extra on this set - a three part Crown Court story from 1975 featuring Yardley as a doctor bringing about a libel case against one of his patients in the story An Evil Influence. Watching this made me yearn for more Crown Courts to be released - they really are excellent!
All in all, this boxset is fantastic, well worth it for good acting, decent story and a trip down memory lane.
For those into crime series like The Sweeney, Special Branch, Hazell etc this is a must buy. Terrific.
The original 3 part pilot is very good, with plenty of stealth, espionage and betrayal giving the later series some issues with keeping pace in terms of action and tight plot over the longer distance. However, it's the ongoing philosophy and reactionary antics of the grizzled Bulman and his leashed sidekick Willis that keep you gripped to the end. As a well read psycho-cop you could say Bulman arrived between Kojak and Cracker and for those who remember Bulman and Strangers. This is where it all started. I need say no more.
To enhance the boxset, a 3 part serial of "Crown Court" with Stephen Yardley has been included. This is an excellent bonus, as not only does it bolster Yardley's profile, but it refreshes your understanding of the social attitudes of the late 1970's and is worthy drama in itself. (That boxset will be huge!)
For the younger generation, Life on Mars fans looking for the real deal, Sweeney fans looking for a come down, well worth a look.
The opening story was well-made, involving African politics and Whitehall machinations. The scenes involving Spider Scott breaking into buildings and safes are exciting and tense. Some of the later stories were drawn out a bit, but the best one was the final set of episodes where Scott was pitted against assassins and shady government operatives looking to tie up loose ends. The action sequences were more dramatic, too. As said before, highly recommended for fans of The Sweeney and Special Branch as well as later spy-based eps of The Professionals, although it would have been much better if it was all done on film like the later episodes of spin-off series Strangers.
