This is how all cult/classic series should be treated on Blu-Ray!!

Remember watching the series as a teenager on BBC2 and/or Sky every week at 9 pm (before classification was slightly relaxed for broadcasting during the day), collected the VHS (yes VHS) and then the DVD's but Blu-Ray was always gonna be the end game for me. After German broadcasts in HD it seemed Blu-Ray was a step closer and now here it is! The boxset on the whole is excellent with just a few niggles which will be mention in the breakdowns.

Packaging
The nine seasons come in m-lock cases which each season containing 6 discs (season 2 has 7 discs). They are housed in a sturdy outer box with the classic Mulder/Scully walking imagery which has become common place over most of the releases and each season contains imagery which is relevant to the season. There is an additional space which could be used for the revival series or for the feature films (available separately on Blu-Ray in directors cut formats). Two issues with the packaging, firstly space, namely should the revival series spawn a second run you're not gonna have any space left for the Blu-Ray release, so you will either have to abandon the outer box, keep it separately, or for some buy a re-release of the boxset (a la James Bond) that includes the new series and more space. The second is the lack of a booklet per season with information about the episodes. The closest you have it the episode list on the reverse of the case cover, of which you have to remove a Blu-Ray and due to the dark cover and blue m-lock case makes reading a bit of an issue on certain light conditions.

Picture/Audio
As the series was only made in the 90's audio and picture quality are more than decent on the whole, in fact I was surprised by the quality on most episodes. For the release they have gone back to the negatives which has allowed a proper widescreen ratio to be applied to the disc's, as the first few series were in 4:3 ratio as per the standard back then. A few episodes show a bit of fuzziness in certain scenes and there is some grain in the blacks but this appears to be due to degrading of film elements for those scenes, of which they have been mastered as good as they could.

Special Features
The previous DVD release features have been ported to this set in HD.

On the whole a superb release, yes a few niggles but everyone will have there own. If only other cult/classic series got this sort of treatment on Blu-Ray!!!

Perfect for any X-Files fan looking to either make the purchase and own the entire original run on, for the first time, Blu-Ray or for the fan who owned the DVD looking to upgrade. It is quite the upgrade over the DVDs, especially the first 4 seasons, which were not in widescreen on the DVDs. The Blu-ray set fixes that and it looks great! The box has a nice design and even has a spot for the season 10 limited series Blu-Ray set (filled with foam piece for shipping purposes). Of course there won't be room for season 11 but this set was produced before anyone knew there would be a season 11. This set is a region free edition, which is far better than the U.S. version, which is locked for region A, at least according to the Amazon site.

I admit first-off that I struggled to get into this show. It was one I had always wanted to get into but I'd get to the end of season 1/ start of season 2 and stop. I done this twice before beginning my binge and boy am I glad I did. Whilst season 1 and 2 are fun in their own right, season 3 really opens up 'the mythology' and ropes you in and Mulder and Scully's chemistry really blossoms. Whilst the mythology became quite difficult to follow at times, contradicting itself in places, it was very enjoyable as if it was building up to something, particularly in season 5.

After the movie, the show continued to be great in my opinion and remained that way. With the start of season 8, an introduction to John Doggett as a main cast member was, I believe, a great choice as it was really interesting to see Scully become the believer, creating conflict with his skepticism. This was a logical move as Scully has seen some unexplainable things in the past 7 years of working on the x files. Ironically, Scully herself would then revert back to the skeptic in the revival series which I thought was a mistake. With the addition of Monica Reyes who would become part of the main cast in season 9 and another believer, the x files was definitely changing. With Mulder gone and Scully reduced to a recurring role in season 9, many fans were not happy with the switching out of Mulder and Scully for Doggett and Reyes. I was too young to be a fan back then but whilst being unsure at the beginning of season 9, I have to admit that I really did enjoy the characters of Monica and John. They had a different relationship from Mulder and Scully, and I liked that. Having Scully as a recurring character was a good choice as it felt kind of like she had become a mentor and someone to call on for help with all of her experience in the past.

I really wish the show had continued from that point as I believe Scully would have continued to make appearances in season 10, maybe fading out of the show in season 11 WITH Mulder and William. All in all this show was many things, some bad, a lot good. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys sci-fi, compelling characters and great stories. The HD remaster I should note is spectacular and really gives the show that crisp look. The bonus features are mostly transferred from the DVDs with some new content which is always a plus for such a release.
