Simon Kernick's short story becomes a living hell for two couples on a getaway break from their usual routine of work and play into the 'middle of nowhere' in a Scottish lodge. A chance encounter with a naked runaway has dire consequences for all. This is a genuinely fast, chilling and frightening account of the fate befalling the innocent parties involved. Neat twist at the end. Only gripe is it ended when it did. Excellent addition to the Quick Read line and the author's writings.

This is a short and gripping read about two couples on a walking holiday in Scotland. The story follows the horrific events that occur after they come across a terrified girl and try to help her.
This is a fast paced thriller and the tension turns up a notch with every page.
Thoroughly enjoyable and very satisfying read.

I am very disappointed in the Author, he usually gives you value for money. This feels as though he was asked to put together 2000 words, this he did without giving any thought to the ending. Next time don't bother for your future readers sake.

I have enjoyed some of Simon Kernicks novels so thought I'd try one of his short stories.
It's not his best but I enjoyed it for a quick read....easily read in about an hour or less. I will not spoil the ending but it was not what I expected, although I'd anticipated the final twist.
What is good about this story is the pace....the dialogue and plot pull the reader forward to continue reading and find out what happens next. I was disappointed with one part of the tale which was way too predictable but I will say no more.
All in all an enjoyable, ruthless and violent tale which entertained me.....which is why I read...well done.

A short, easy read littered with every horror/chase movie cliché possible and finished off with a very lazy ending.

**SPOILERS**

How exactly does someone break into the upstairs of a desolate cottage with four very scared people hiding out downstairs not hearing a thing? And, why would you hide a picture of a murderous loved one behind a toilet on the off chance one of his victims showed drop in unannounce?
These are just a couple of the lazy clichés that keep the story short and unimaginative.

I don't often write reviews, well negative ones, but this is one of those books which does what it should not, it breaks all the rules between reader and writer.... SPOILER.... You root for the good guy, well girl you are exhausted getting through the woods with her, to stumble across 'that' innocent little old lady who is yes, you've guessed it a bad old lady... I agree with the other 1* reviewers this is full of cliche and was so predictable all way through, most of it utterly unbelievable, and after putting all the effort into rooting for the protagonist they kill her anyway and get away with it... That's 45mins of my life I'm not getting back...!

i am a fan of Simon Kernick and i could not give high enough praise for his last book seige but this one started of promising, but went down hill from there and endings that left you wondering why you bothered to read the book in the first place,
