Product description
Review
"The 23-year-old British singer has delivered a bit of a monster Bond ballad with Writing's on the Wall, the theme for the filmSpectre. It is very, very slow and surprisingly restrained, at times floating by on resonant piano notes, the faintest brush stroke of orchestra, with all the focus on Smith’s intense, tremulous vocal, rising with controlled pace and tension to an audacious chorus pay-off." - Neil McCormick, The Telegraph

The problem with this song is it is not on any album, not even on the Original Soundtrack which I agree with other reviewers for this single it is not fair.
I held off for awhile but after hearing it when I got the Blu-Ray for Spectre and heard it once again I realised I find the ballad is just too beautiful not to be in my collection so I purchased it.
When Spectre was being filmed the normal rumour mill was that it was Ellie Goulding who was the one given the honour of the 'Bond' film song... and I was appalled at the thought of having this 'celebrity' (can't call her a singer because she can't sing a note) so I was so relieved to hear it was going to be Sam Smith.
I also like the fact the Bond theme song has gone back to a 'proper' song with the recognisable orchestral wall of sound
and strong lyrics, for me it deserved the Golden Globe and Academy Award Awards (It is the only other Bond song to win - Adele's song Skyfall was the first)
Yes sometimes personal rules need to be broken and this was one of those times, and I am so glad I did.
I decided to buy the single when I found out that the theme this wasn’t included on the Spectre soundtrack album, (like two previous Bond soundtrack CD’s which are “Casino Royale” (2006) and “Skyfall” (2012) so it wasn’t a surprise to me as I decided to check the CD listing). That was because I got caught out myself with the “Casino Royale” (2006) and I was extremely annoyed.
The album only includes the instrumental version and is only 2 minutes and 9 seconds, whilst on the single you get the full version which is 4 minutes 39 seconds.
I love all the Bond movie soundtracks and have all of them on CD, (as well as having them on vinyl up till 1985 and the themes from the 1970’s and 1980’s on vinyl singles).
Now I know a lot of people don’t like the new Bond theme, but I love it and it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
It’s very reminiscent of the music composed for the underwater scenes in “Thunderball”, (the late and great John Barry wrote some wonderful original movie scores, and I have all his film soundtracks that were released).
The lyrics of “Writing on the Wall” are well written as Bond has always run away from love and commitment ever since his wife Tracey was killed by the head of Spectre in “On Her Majesty Secret Service”.
Orchestration of the piece I think is wonderful as they’ve kept it very minimal with piano, strings and including some brass instruments which has made it more romantic, mournful and extremely haunting. :-)
Personally I love this theme as to me this is how a Bond theme should sound and I’m extremely pleased it got to number one. :-)
I do like this, even though some may shudder at its high-pitched falsetto male vocals, these are admittedly not something we have ever associated with ‘Bond’ before. However, the theme is not just about Bond it’s about the story and feel of the film. And yes, although we have the beautiful sweeping orchestrations I still don’t think it comes quite as close to the heights of other Bond theme tunes, but then again I can't ever imagine any other future song being more deeply heartfelt and emotional as this, which Sam Smith does of course with such pure perfection. It takes the whole Bond theme genre in a totally new direction, love it or hate it.
If you're not keen on Sam’s vocal version this CD also features a wonderful instrumental version, which some Bond fans may appreciate.
