Being a product of a British ‘secondary modern’ education system where my English teacher thought ‘Shakespeare’ was something an athlete did with a javelin, there was neither a formal certificate of education nor any advice about what happens after you leave school. Seriously! Consequently, when (many years later) I produced my first book - there were those who actively disapproved. I was serving in the army at the time and one senior officer actually said to me “By what right do you seek to write a book about Scuba Diving?” Nevertheless, in spite of such disapproval, I am now described as an award-winning, best-selling author. The relevance being ANY would-be writer can produce a work worthy of being read by strangers (which is what writers do!) provided their personal drive remains undiminished. You really cannot allow detractors to extinguish your own bright shining light of original creativity.
Having said that, writing it all down is only part of the process with most first-time authors having no idea what comes next.
Of all the aids which might be described as ‘the aspiring writer’s best friend,’ few compare favourably to this one - which is improved every year. Aimed primarily at the UK market, it is not just a collection of addresses for book publishers and magazine editors. Instead, it contains almost everything you might need to know when writing for the different categories of; Books, Magazines, Newspapers, Poetry, TV, Film, Radio, Theatre and so forth.Read more ›
I'm glad he loved it and hopefully with the help of the Writers' and Artists' yearbook, it will be a useful tool to garner a publishing deal!
I can't go into more depth about the contents as I haven't held it in my hand, but needless to say, my friend wouldn't say how good it was if it wasn't, and he's hard to impress! ☺
The Writers' & Artists' Yearbook is well-known as being a massive reference book, containing data on publishers, TV companies etc. However, the blurb states that the book also will give practical advice, guidance and inspiration, not only to writers but to artists and photographers too.
I've had the book six months and so far I'm pleased with it. In addition to lists of addresses etc there are 60+ articles on a wide variety of subjects such as How To Get Started and How to Write a Crime Novel. This book is not fixed in the past, and there chapters on Self Publishing, e-books, etc. Each is written by an acknowledged expert. So far I've learned loads from reading the first half-dozen. Specifically, a friend mentioned that a photo I posted on a social media site would make a great cover for an e-book. Following the article in W&AY I copyrighted it and made my first fee from a cover artist listed in W&AY just five days later.
In terms of negative points, I did see a comment from another publisher that the information is out of date and contains too many articles as opposed to listings. The W&AY explains, from the start, that writers and artists must expect to confirm addresses, editors' names and submission requirements etc before sending off their precious work - that's the reality of life as a published author, a working artist.
For me, the articles are turning out to be at least as important as the listing data - if even half turn out to be authoritative, I shall be delighted. As a writer rather than a rival publisher I'm looking for advice and insider knowledge as well as email addresses and telephone numbers.
I plan to return and update this review in a couple more months, but so far I consider this book worth the purchase price, provided you think you will use the wide variety of material it covers.
not a good start . i guess you have to phone and check but for a book taht is the 2017 edition , thats not great and somewhat unexpected.
I also buy firstwriter.com's Writers' Handbook each year (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Writers-Handbook-2017-Paul-Dyson/dp/1909935131/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471847236&sr=8-1&keywords=writers+handbook+2017). I notice that the information for my company IS correct in that book, suggesting it is perhaps better researched than this one. It also has more pages of literary agent listings, more pages of magazine listings, and more pages of publisher listings (despite being a much slimmer book -- I guess it is more focussed), and it is also cheaper. The Writers' & Artists' Yearbook is full of too much waffle you just don't need.
