The Conservative Party have been in power for 47 of the 65 years since the end of the Second World War. During that time the division within the party over Europe has been the enduring drama of British politics – from Churchill’s decision not to join the original European Coal and Steel Community in 1951 to Cameron’s decision to hold an In/Out referendum in 2016. Other leaders came and went, but the issue was always there ― sometimes centre-stage, at others behind the scenes ― destabilising foreign policy, corroding the body politic, and destroying several of the party’s leaders. These questions, and how they panned out, created a deep, grumbling discontent – the worm in the apple – that, over time, turned the Conservative Party and, by extension, a significant section of the electorate against British membership of the EU. By telling the story of the arguments and divisions within the Conservative Party, The Worm in the Apple explains why Britain voted to leave in 2016. It is by no means the whole story, but they are an important part of it.

About the Author

Christopher Tugendhat was a leader writer for the Financial Times before being elected as an MP for the Cities of London and Westminster. He served as a member of the European Commission for nine years and was later chairman of Chatham House and the Civil Aviation Authority before being appointed to the House of Lords by John Major.

Really easy read, no previous knowledge required

The author has a unique inside knowledge on Common Market/EU thinking at senior levels of the Conservative Party right back from 1975. He assumes no knowledge on the part of the reader so it is a very easy read (he sums up virtually every European and UK Election without assuming any knowledge on the reader's part). It would be have been great for this reader if Tugendhat had developed his own ideas more (e.g. should the Conservative grass roots have been more warned about the theoretical loss of 'sovereignty' in the 1970s so when it came to the 2000s there was less 'shock') and a little more intra-Tory gossip would have been nice. The book is worth a quick read as sometimes it does add to 'known' history e.g. it comes out loud and clear to this reader - at least - that Thatcher would have opposed Brexit on the basis of the evidence in this book. Ken Clarke is even wiser and more honest than you would have thought. Tugendhat has widely read many political biographies and picks out the most relevant best bits. A nice easy read, with no previous EU or UK knowledge required

The good news, after reading this very clear account of the interactions of British politics and European union, is that our earlier governments and politicians were at times just as chaotic and short-sighted as they currently appear, and yet Britain survived and intermittently thrived. The bad news is how consistently British leaders have failed to have an honest dialogue with the electorate about Europe and how the right wing media filled that vacuum with its downbeat and negative narrative. Christopher Tugendhat tells the inside story from the (nowadays unusual) perspective of a Europhile Tory, pulling no punches but also striving to be fair in his assessment of what went wrong and how, with better timing, different faces in No.10 and without the Thatcher/Delors animosity factor, things might have worked out differently. Written in an easy, accessible style and full of sharp character sketches, this is a book that will appeal not just to the modern historian but to anyone with a passing interest in the place of Britain in the world today. Highly enjoyable.
