4.0 out of 5 stars and still a good read, but some of the work it influenced ... 3 April 2017
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
A very influential classic, and still a good read, but some of the work it influenced have honored it by building on it, and making it less essential: Sarah Thornton's SEVEN DAYS IN THE ART WORLD, for example, is a punchier text to pout in students' hands. Also, the art world continues to play out its history, giving rise to the need for some updating. The abiding classic in the field, in my view, continues to be Bourdieu's DISTINCTION.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Sociologists of Culture 15 Jan. 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Becker's Art Worlds is a classic. Not only does he define "art world," which is critical for the study of the arts, but he covers so many topics of the arts (from creation, to sales, to networks, etc). This book is like the Bible of art worlds and can be applied in so many ways, beyond what most people consider "fine art." A serious must-have for anyone studying the arts in sociology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a classic... 23 Mar. 2013

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
To understand the sociology of culture, this is a great book on the societal building process behind even the most simple of art pieces. A true classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good sociology 31 Dec. 2012

Readable and good scholarly work. Becker takes apart the art world to peer inside at all the moving parts. Definitely a must for sociologists studying culture.
