The final paragraph of the introductory chapter states that the book “aims to share ideas and thoughts on making the workplace a happier place to be, and to help employers create their own world of good”. It’s all about improving the employee experience so that people can show up as the best version of themselves each day at work.
Personally, I have always subscribed to the belief that organisations should be a force for good. The book describes how organisations and their demands on employees have created a malaise where presenteeism and long hours have taken their toll on the well being of the employee with record levels of sickness and mental health issues being the price to pay for the absence of work life harmony.
What I like about this book is that each chapter presents an idea on how the workplace doesn’t have to be like this; ranging from simple ideas borrowed from other countries such as the Fika from Sweden or the Merriggiare from Italy. You’ll have to read the book to find out more.
Additionally, each idea presented is backed up with statistical evidence and case studies that prove that the premise behind the Geborgenheit (chapter 5) or the Arbetsdag (chapter 6) are backed up with sound reasons and that the commercial benefits of implementing these initiatives far outweigh the implementation challenges.
There were lots of things in the book that resonated with me and confirmed ideas and learning that I had encountered in my career in Learning and Development; such as the need to give the brain a rest for it to solve problems and how solutions and great ideas come at times when the brain is meandering such as taking a shower.
